'94 Ranger...I've got two "cats" on my exhaust (aka metal tub things), from what I understand one is a cat and one is a resonator. I was the resonator to go bye bye...so which one is it, the second one?
'94 4.0L, non-Kalifornia.
Simply enough, is the second "tub" the resonator or the cat?
how can u pass if its gone? im talking about taking them both off and shoving a large metal something down it it and emptying it out and then putting back on
i think there bolth cats...that being said a cat is not round on your car it kinda pentagon flat kinda thing sorta almost.... anway a resonator usually is perfectly round like a borla muffler and its usually at the end or way middle of the exhaust not by the engine where the cat is.. if you get a picture up im sure one of us could tell you..
And a side note on the hollowing out of cats i caint speak specifically for rangers but on highperformance mustangs like supercharged 5.0s that need to be smogged ive seen a loss in power when the cat was hollowed out compaired to just a normal "high flow" cat seems the exhaust gets confewsed going from say a 2.5 inch pipe to 3.25 inside the cat and then back to 2.5.... does make it loud though
I still have to pass inspection in Texas. And that involves a sniffer, which involves the cat. I can't hollow out the cat. If I'm positive the rear "unit" isn't a cat and is just a resonator, well then heck ya I'll take the punch to it. But I don't wanna blow a cat out just to replace it next July for inspection.
Wow, whoever inspects your truck is very strict! The guy who does the inspections on all the vehicles of mine and my family's only checks to make sure the lights and horn work. That's it! You should find a smaller town to get your truck inspected.
Sorry...been busy. School, ROTC, lots of stuff just going on.
Social update: being a senior is cool, classes are easy. rotc is interesting yet again. girlfriend of a year and eight months and I broke up. New one is cooler, and she likes trucks! Ford family! Other than that not a lot has been on.
Hmm...might have to drive down to Eastland bigdavesohc...around here they're pretty damn bad with the inspections. I know of some places who will pass you if you know the right people, but nonetheless I'd like to keep it legal.
I actually moved to Cisco (10miles west of Eastland), and a podunk shop about 2 miles away will pass anything. Even the Goodyear tire dealer (big name in Eastland) will pas almost anything.
The white "grid" is the functional part of the cat. You may be able to remove the secondary cat w/o affecting drivability provided the secondary O2 sensor is in front of it, but you still won't be sure of passing inspection. I hate to say it, but leaving it alone is your best bet, and I don't believe your truck was equipped with a resonater anyway.
resonaters are usually just on deisils and act kinda like a cat.
I agree, here in san antonio I just drive up and flash the lights and drive off. No sniffin.
the resonator should look like a factory "glasspack" and all 11 of are rangers don't have anything like that just two cats and weird looking muffler
even if you find a less strict inspector don't hollow out your cat you will lose power you have to keep to exhaust gases hot and by hollowing out the cat you create a cooling chamber than the cool exhaust gases have to be compressed back down to the size of pipe which creates lots of back pressure, just take the cat off fillet it and weld a piece in place of the cat then weld on the two cat shells so it looks like legit cat.
