460 Cam

I've got a cam question for my 1994 ford F-250 with a 460. Here in the near future I need to tear into my engine on my pickup. I've accumulated slight coolant leaks at the intake and the timing chain cover. So...I was thinking that I might roll in a little bit of a hotter cam while I'm that far into it. I need to know what kind to get, and how big of a lift and stuff like that. I'm just a heavy equipment deisel mechanic...so profomance issues is not something I deal with everyday. I still want to be able to drive it everyday if need be, I just want to open it up a little bit. thanks guys

hate to say it but in my opinion with the stock speed density system on your truck you won't be able to put a big enough cam in it to make it worth the swap with out messing up your fuel injection system, if you really wanna do something with it for not too much $$ find a 4bbl intake manifold and carb and distirbutor that was pre fuel injection or just buy a performance one, get a bypass fuel pressure regulator and run a 3/8ths return line to your tank (the stock one isn't big enough) and then you can throw in a fat lumpy cam to get some power the comp cam xe series is good for a daily driver i would recommend something close to the xe 274, it's a good cam that will have plenty of lope but still have power around 2000rpms if you decide to go this route with swapping to a carb just let me know i'll walk you through the process, hah you want to trade and i'll do all the work on your truck if you fix up this old bulldozer we have on the farm lol i can build a nasty performance motor but can't do crap with deisil

or you could do the MAF? conversion but i hear its really hard to do this to a 460

this is just an example of what you could throw together and make some mean power (i'm bored had surgery over a month ago and still not allowed to drive or leave the house)

intake:

Carb:

Distributor:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Parts...1%7C240%3A1308

Cam:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Parts...1%7C240%3A1318

after you get it all done you'll probably want to throw on some headers exhaust and a looser converter in the future if you want more power

on your cam without knowing what your heads flow i would not go above around .540 lift and try to keep the advertised duration around 280-300

Free up your exhaust system first, big gains can be had there without touching the engine. lots of info on this here.

Alright Tbird, thanks for the advice...What kind of dozer you need work done to? And as far freeing up my exhaust...I've got headman headers running to a strait pipe (sounds pretty wicked).
But back to you Tbird, I wasn't quite wanting to do a carb conversion, or any conversion for that matter, just work with what I got. I know that I won't gain what I could If I went to do different system. I was thinking about rolling in a bigger cam without doing much valve train or fuel system work (bigger injecters I could handle). But thankyou guys for the input.
I was looking at somthing like this:
Brand: Lunati
Product Line: Lunati Truck Avenger Cam and Lifter Kits
Part Type: Camshaft and Lifter Kits
Part Number: LUN-90460LK
Cam Style: Hydraulic flat tappet
Basic Operating RPM Range: 1,600-4,600
Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift: 210
Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift: 218
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 210 int./218 exh.
Advertised Intake Duration: 258
Advertised Exhaust Duration: 266
Advertised Duration: 258 int./266 exh.
Intake Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.487 in.
Exhaust Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.504 in.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.487 int./0.504 exh. lift
Lobe Separation (degrees): 114
Intake Valve Lash: 0.000 in.
Exhaust Valve Lash: 0.000 in.

honestly i doubt you'll see much of a gain over the stock cam, with that cam you could more than likely use the same valve springs and i would bet that that would be compatable with your stock computer system but i'm not sure, i did a quick search and this is a cam i came up with that would work with the factory computer
COMP Cams 34-255-5 - COMP Cams Computer-Controlled Camshafts - summitracing.com

but seeing as that cam you listed is just a smiggin bigger i would assume it would work, but don't quote me on this i try to stay away from fuel injection for reasons like this. if i were you i would ask a few questions at 460ford.com :: Index

do a search there are alot of people that up to a little better cam while keeping the speed density i am planning on doing it this summer. this is the one i am considering right now Crane Cams 353901 - Crane PowerMax Camshafts - summitracing.com. youll notice about the same power gain as going from stock exhaust to headers and good flowing piping another good idea from what i have heard is to get some mild porting when you get the cam done just to open it up a little more, we are held back by the speed density but we can definantly get some more power. i can chirp if not break loose my 37s with 3.55 gears right now
