Hey all. As Ia newbie to the RWV scene I am looking for a car/truck to tow behind my motor home. I am really a Ranger fan and am thinking of a Ranger 4WD but am not sure about the transfer case. I am wanting to stay with an automatice but tshe transmission needs to be completeley disconnected so that it doesn't need lubrication. I have been told that some Rangers have a trued transfer case that completely disconnects the automatic. My options are a manual transmission or drive line disconnect, both o which I would like to avoid.
I'm not sure about towing a 4x4 ranger. I do know the rangers with the electric shift t-case has no neutral postion, only 2wd, 4hi and 4low. So the driveshaft may have to be removed, but I'm not positive. I would check my owners manual on how to tow it, but my manual is in my truck. My truck is at my dealers body shop from where my wife rolled it. Someone on here should be able to look at thier manual and tell you.
A manual transfer case will have a neutral position that disconnects the driveline completely. You can use an automatic transmission in that case, but as Wendell said, the electronic shift transfer case doesn't have the neutral position, and thus you couldn't use it. I have also seen a disconnect that installs at the rear of the driveshaft on a 2wd so that you can unlock the driveshaft, accomplishing what you are trying to, but without the use of a transfer case. I have no idea where it came from, it obviously wasn't a factory option! Good luck on your search.
Major; for a drive line disconnect system, check with a travel trailer or RV store in your area. If they do towing mods on trucks and SUV's they should at least know of them. If they don't have any, ask who might. I've seen them advertised in some RV magazines.
