Hello all!
Last year, on my ranger, the light switch started to act up. If pulled out (like normally) only the headlights would come on; no running lights, interior lights or brake lights would illuminate. I could get everything to work by gently pushing the switch in, about half way between parking lights and headlights only. So i replaced the light switch with another, a used one from ebay. This switch did the same thing. So I just dealt with it untill recently, when the lights would just go off, due to the switch leaving the "sweet spot". So I bought a new switch from napa, having to reuse the shaft the switch rides on. Yup, new switch does the exact same thing! My guess is that shaft is worn and is allowing my to pull the **** out to far. Has anyone else had this issue? is it the shaft? Or is something in the electrical system?
Thanks all!
Never heard of buying a light switch, and having to use the old shaft?? Sounds like the problem, but I always thought that it came as an assembly..Somebody should shed some light(sorry) on this subject.......
I wasn't able to get a picture of the headlight switch in the Motorcraft web site, but did find a picture of it in the LMC Truck catalog. The **** is sold separately from the the switch. What's even more interesting, the **** is more expensive than the switch. It looks like you need to buy the **** as well in order to solve your problem. Once again, one learns something new every day, it seems. Good luck.
Just got the shaft and **** assy from ford, $25.00. The dipstick tube for my 89 f150 was only $3 more. Sorta feeling like they got the better end of that deal.... I'll change it this weekend, here's hoping....
You might want to check over the terminal block with all the wire connectors on it that plugs into the light switch. Check it for being slightly melted and/or burned around some of the wire terminals and check for any melted or burned looking insulation on the wires where they attach to the connector. I had a similar problem on my 91 just last year. My local dealer had a new terminal block with new connectors and pig tails installed. That was the biggest surprise and it was around 15 bucks. It was an after market part but the dealer had it. Once that terminal block gets a little warped from heat or a connector is burned it won't let the system work correctly.
