97 Ford Explorer transfer case

I was having problems with the 4wd on my explorer so i disconnected the wiring harness on the transfer case. it solved the problem but I wanted to make sure having it disconnected wasn't going to cause any other problems.

when I was turning at low speeds it seemed like the front was binding up. I've had problems with the 4wd before but only when I tried putting it in 4wd hi or low.

That is driveline windup..

You have a ControlTrac T/C, which is activated by a differential in the turning radius of the tires.... either you have some tires of different profile or the pressure is not even..

Dirty fluid also exacerbates this condition, as the clutches drag.

Drain the T/C, fill with fresh A/T fluid. Pull the 2 Hall sensors and clean the crud off them...... Philip

ok thanks I might give that a try.
also i tried putting it in 4 lo once (and the last time), it made a loud thud noise and the car shook. I tried driving a few feet but it was f'd. it was like something was holding it back. I tried putting it back in 4 auto but it got stuck but I eventually got it out....
so I guess what I'm trying to figure out is if I'm better off leaving it with 2wd permanently or doing what u said (changing fluid etc.)

thanks,
justin
