Okay, back to what this topic was started for. I got a good look at some stuff last night on the truck. It is a 351w. It does have a 4 spd. Are the 4 spd and transfer case going to be the same as if it had a 351M?? Also the front is a leaf spring IFS. Will the 85.5 - 90 straight axle be a direct bolt-in?? Will the tranny and t-case hold up to some tough use. This truck was my dad's and lived its whole life in the oil-field and on a farm. Always a good truck for him and sentimental value for me (first vehicle I learned to drive (I was 6)). I know it has lived a rough life already and held up. Just making sure I wouldn't have to dig into the tranny and t-case for the time being.
Both good trannies and yes, probably used by Ford behind most of their engines.
The transfer case will be a new Process 208(straight shift pattern) or a Borg Warner 1345(zig-zag shift pattern). Both were used like the trannies, in various engine and tranny configurations. The 1345 is considered a little bit stronger than the 208, but both are modern aluminum case transfers with chains. There is a heavy duty cast iron transfer case Ford used in the 70's(205), and it is all gear and very heavy duty, but Ford never used these originally in the 80-up trucks. Some people swap them in though.
The dana 60 will be a direct swap if you get the steering linkage and a few other things needed.
