I just ordered a set of Dipricol Optix gauges. Pyro, Boost, and Tranny temp. I haven't gotten them in yet so I'm not gonna be much help. I was told they match the factory gauges the best.
Pyro is for watching Exhaust Gas Temps (EGTs). If they get too hot (sustained over 1250-1300* F), you can melt a piston. Spend a little extra and get the DiPricols -- you'll really like 'em.
what is a pyro for? i am new to diesels. hey just curious what fd are you from?
The pyrometer tells ya how hot the combustion chamber is via the exhaust temperature. This is not terribly important until you turn the power up. When you add more fuel (ie, a 'chip'), the combustion temps can exceed the melting point of the aluminum pistons. This gauge, along with boost and temperature can tell you alot if the engine is not running correctly as well. The transmission temp is critical to long transmission life - cooler is better. Many of us have added additional temp sensors on a multi-position switch so we can monitor trans temp as well as coolant, engine oil, differential temps, etc... I'm fond of the Dipricol Optix gauges. Have'm in both PSD's. Here's the Ex's a-pillar mount.
Personally, i like the Dipricols. Their color matches perfectly, as well as the font style, IMHO. Get boost, trans, and EGT. I have a full sweep trans and wouldn't have it any other way.
A little grainy, but here is a night shot.
You can kind of see the factory panel to see how it looks. Mines a '02, so the instrument panel font is a little different than the earlier models
Good luck with the decision, either way, you'll like having them!
by the way, SkiSkyJason, nice setup there!

Reason: wanted to add
so you mean you can use one gauge for the engine temp and the tranny temp? how is that?
If ya get a temp gauge with a one-wire sending unit, ya can use a switch to select which sender the gauge sees. In (the wife's) Excursion, I just used a DPST switch - the center pin on switch goes to gauge and the outer pins eac go to a sender. Wifey does not need too many choices, otherwise a 6 position rotary switch can be used (avail. from radio smack) and sending units are only about $10 each. Thanks George! I agree so much about the full-sweep, I sold my 'partial' sweep temp gauge and stuck an HPO pressure gauge in that hole in our F350. Someday I'll install this 3 gauge 'over the mirror' pod and get my temp gauge back. Unless I get the 4 gauge 'over the mirror'... Damn PSD Mod syndrome!! The HPO pressure gauge just helps justify Big Oil to go with the bigger injectors I already installed. Of course, after Big Oil I'm sure I can use a bigger turbo - by then, the LUK clutch I have may not hold anymore, but since I likely have PMR's (powdered metal rods), I'll be tearing the motor down before I can do tooooo much more. Really, I can stop anytime I want! Come on Mom, I was just holding that bag of parts for a friend..... really!!
