I have 2004 6.0L that I have had zero problems with - it has 30,000 miles. I keep hearing about the EGR valves and other stuff going bad - now that it's out of warranty I don't know what I should do with it. Is there anything I should do to it to ensure I don't have these problems? It has an Edge used primarily to check temps.
thanks
luke
Use the Edge ONLY for information
Make sure you do your oil and fuel filter changes as required
Use only OEM or OEM style filters
Get a coolant filter
Make sure you have the most recent flash
Keep your batteries and electrical system in good working order
Don't work it hard cold
I changed my EGR valve out on my own dime at 30k - glad I did - it was filthy
Do the ccv re-route mod
After towing hard, do not shut it down immediately - you need to let exhaust temps cool down
Many discuss the pro's and con's, but use a good synthetic oil
IIRC there was an update on the EGR valve so I bought a new one to get the "latest and greatest". I cleaned the old one and I now have it to use as a spare, mainly to have in case it ever becomes necessary to change it while on a trip.
If you do choose to pull it and clean it, there is a specifc cleaning procedure to make sure you do not damage the unit.
That being said - if you wait til you have problems with it, the dealership will change it out on your 100k warranty (no deductible since it is an emissions component). I did not want to wait for problems - glad I didn't wait - it was very sticky/dirty.
