Explorer 302 OK with SD?

I did some searches and I found conflicting answers, so hoping to get the final word here: If I swap the stock 302 in my '91 Bronco for a 2000 Explorer 5.0, do I have to convert to MAF or not? I would probably like to convert to MAF, but I have an E4OD.

It's plug and play as long as you use your truck intake, if you use the Explorer intake some wiring and plumbing changes will have to be made since the TB is in a different place.

If you dont want to do alot of wiring the SD system will last and operate very well. There is alot of debate on SD vs MAF, it only amounts to if you are going to modify little things and do not want to worry about changes to the Comp, MAF is the way to go. Just be aware of the mods, the ECU only allows for a 15% change in your system before it can no longer compensate for those mods. This is a fact for any of the EFI systems from Ford.

If you are looking for a very extensive modification of the engine, you can no longer rely on the factory ECU being able to compensate for the radical changes. You will have to move up to an Aftermarket ECU that is programable to your set up.

Speed density and mass air are just engine management systems. The engine doesn't care which one is being used.

I probably should have added that the engine will remain stock, the only possible mod I would make would be some shorty headers, but the GT40P heads may nix that. I'll be going with the Explorer exhaust manifolds initially in any case.

Is there a performance gain from using the Explorer intake? If not I'll just use mine to make it as simple as possible.

I was gonna put a 7.3IDI diesel in my Bronco but I ran across this motor for cheap and I need something simple and quick right now.

The explorer intake may help low-mid power a little, but we're only talking a little, not worth the hastle IMO unless you want the motor to look different. The Explorer 5.0 is essentially the same as the '94+ F150 motor except for the heads, same cam and bottom end.

I read somewhere, in one of the searches I did, that I needed to swap out the timing cover and water pump, what's that all about?

I'm thinking that the explorer water pump is shorter, which causes the pulley to not line up with the truck accessory drive.
