Chevy 2.8L Starter

Hey , any Chevy wrench turners out there? Working on a buddies' 87 GMC S15. Pulled the tranny to replace the front seal. In the process the starter was removed. It had shims between block and starter. The truck started fine before removing the starter. When I reinstalled the starter with the shims it is grinding while tying to engage. The shims were installed just as they were removed. I tried removing a shim , adding a shim , and even no shims at all. All are the same result. The starter is still not engaging properly. Anybody got any ideas what I am doing wrong? I 've installed and removed the starter 6 times now and it's starting to **** me off!!

No , the flywheel was never removed. It will start the truck , it just sounds like a chainsaw when it turns over the motor. The bendix isn't sticking at all. This has got me stumped.

It sounds to me like a bad one way clutch on the starter and no I couldn`t explain it. But is it is just a guess.

Thanks for the help guys, but found out that the wrong bolts were used for the starter mounting bolts. The ones that were in were a flush shank type bolt. The ones that were suppose to be there have a shoulder right at the end of the bolt. The starter was going in at a angle because of the extra play. I replaced the bolts with the shoulder style bolts and it works perfect. I always wind up on a cobbled mess it seems like.
Live and learn
Thanks again!!

There`s a silver lining to every cloud, I bet if you have to pull another Chevy starter you will be able to do it blindfold.
