I know how most rears work but how does a open rear work? Is it simular to limited slip? Ive got an open rear and was planing to open it up this weekend and weld it up. But I was just curious on how one worked thanks for any input-------Robert
Yeah,,,,not to far just around to area mud holes----Ive welded plenty of 9 in. rears and yea I know how the tires wear harder like this but this is no worrie,,since this truck is just a weekend toy.
If you have welded plenty of 9 in rears in the past then you should be familiar with an open rear, otherwise you wouldn't need to weld it.
Basically an open rear means power goes to the wheel that can spin. So if you are stuck in mud and only one wheel is spinning, that is the wheel that was open and available to spin.

tire wear isnt your main concern...its axle breakage and other drivetrain related stress...but i guess you know that if youve locked 9inchers before
Correct me if I'm wrong but an open diff works like this. Left axle speed + Right axle speed = drive shaft speed (taking into account gear ratios). Meaning if your going straight without spinning any wheels both tires will be spinning the same speed. If you turn one wheel spins x speed while the outside wheel spins that much faster than the other so that the combined speed still equals the initial speed. Meaning when your stuck and one wheel is spinning and the other isn't, the spinning wheel will be turning twice as fast as if both the wheels were spinning. Right?
