LOL....... NICE. I broke a few bricks in my time, but we normally went for boards. I studied a traditional Okinawan style back in my high school days for almost 5 years, and basically gave it up when I went active duty. Made it to Brown Belt, and tried picking it up again a couple years ago, but just couldn't stay with it. Before you ask, in that style, rank comes much slower than some others. LOL... Not enough time in my life, sadly. That is the ONE regret that I have -- I really wish I could've stayed with it.
I'm trying to stay with it, but on a limited basis. This year marks 15 years of TaeKwonDo for me.
A few years back I owned and operated a TKD school. In a national tournament, I was kicked in the back full force directly on the spine. The injury is permanent, I can no longer train or teach full time, I can't do certain techniques anymore (I can barely do basic kicks with my left leg), and I still suffer to this day with side effects from nerve damage. A year later I sold the school to some instructors that I had known for several years, and they still run the school today.
But I still love martial arts, and about once a week I go down to the Springs to assist teaching with a friend of mine at his school (plus my wife still trains). I don't train much, but I am doing a demo this weekend for his students, and the brick break is going to be part of that demo.
Oh damn. Sorry to hear that, Curtis. I got lucky and found a dojo here that was from the same place in NJ that my old Sensei was from. The Sensei here actually knew my old instructor very well. I just travel too much and have way too many other things going on. And a year or two ago, the dojo here closed down or moved and I have no idea where it went.
I remember when I first made brown belt and went to a tourny -- I was all excited until I found out they put brown belts with junior black belts! I was a nervous wreck when I found that out! In the style I studied, black belt was a MAJOR accomplishment that took 5-7 years. I really knew nothing about some of the other styles where a black belt could be earned in as little as 2 or 3 years. I actually took first place in Kumite, and did well in Katas as well. I was amazed! I still remember a lot of my training, but the katas have started to fade, unfortunately.
Thats pretty cool, I mean you see that kinda thing on tv, but you cant believe everything you see on tv. And I dont watch much tv anyways, so that doesnt leave much for me to believe anyways lol. My truck was practicing too, but I think most have seen that LOL
For those of you who have read Curtis' write up on how to remove and replace up-pipes and thought, "Sounds easy enough. I think I'll try that.", remember, he can break bricks.
