Meineke says I burnt a cat back muffler in 50 miles,
I had a noise (loud rattle at various rpm's)coming from my muffler about 3000 mile after cat back installed. I took it back to meineke and they replaced the muffler in less than 50 miles the noise was back louder then before. They said I burnt the muffler due to a engine problem and the muffler getting very hot and burning out the baffles. My check engine light does not come on and my engine is not running hot, I am not having any peformance problems and they said the muffler had to get cherry hot to burn it out wouldn't I have been able to smell this if the muffler got that hot. Meineke is blaming it on the truck has any one had anything like this occur? Any suggestions?

Meineke just called me they put the muffler for a Camaro on, the baffles in the muffler are across instead of straight through and are restricting air flow and getting very hot and burning the muffler baffles out and creating the noise. Could this have caused engine damage due to the exhaust restriction and the extra heat?

I wouldnt think that it could hurt it much in just 100 miles. Just get documentation of their mistake just in case something does come up.

hi shadow.like nathan said keep documentation.get an invoice that shows the wrong muffler had been installed.and take the truck in and have a good mechanic go thru and check out the motor.and in the future stay out of places like mineke and their likes.you pay big $ for a 3 dollar muffler.LaMar.

I have alot of issues with this whole discussion. First of all, An engine which has a manifold leak or other problem with fuel system can result in excess amounts of fuel in the exhaust system. If the fuel is igniting in the exhaust system it could get hot enough to damage the exhaust components. Second, Baffles in a muffler are not designed to be positioned any one way, other than the dirrection of flow, which I think the case may be here. " THE MUFFLER WAS MOST LIKELY INSTALLED IN REVERSE OF THE PROPER FLOW""OR BACKWARDS". In any event you would absouloulty have a perfomance problem.
In most cases this would do no harm to your engine in such a short amount of miles.
I would also like to address that Meineke is a Franchise and each one is independantly run, so dont listen to the people that tell you, you should never goto a Meineke. Also 95% of Meineke owners use Maramount or Walker mufflers and pipes the are both very well known products that are much more that "$3 dollars mufflers"

I had Cherry Bomb Vortech Mufflers installed on my 1999 F-150 XLT 4.2L and they sounded great, even felt a bit more power, not a ton, but noticable. And it wasn't too expensive. Cat back with the muffler, stainless pipes and 3" x 18" chrome slashed tips for $275 installed. Not too bad at all.
