Exhaust question

Worked my old girl hard this past couple weekends by hauling 10 tons of gravel for a patio base. Got under there once to check axle/frame clearance and saw that my right side tail pipe is broken and the back piece dangling.

What do you guys recommend for a replacement? Does anyone (rockauto does not) make pre-fabbed stuff or do I just hit Meineke or something and have them take care of me?

This truck came with one glass pack and one cherry bomb. Now I finally have a good reason to put regular mufflers on her.

I'll say it only because you asked... LMC carries a pre-fabbed dual system for AT-equipped FEs.

My personal preference is headers and a dual 2.5-inch system.

If it's a working truck, then I'd head down to a custom muffler shop and have them bend up 2.5-inch head pipes merged into a single 3-inch system following the stock configuration. Of course, a 3-inch I/O muffler of your choice.

Seems like exhaust has been the hot topic the last few days! haha

I'd go with what hio said. But how you build your exhaust needs to considered with entire package. If your running a stock half worn out 2bbl engine, with a truck that never goes over 55mph, headers and dual 2.5" pipes is kidna pointless. Unless you plan on upgrading down the road....

A single exhaust is great for simplicity, and will probably be quieter and smoother than duals.

definitely a stock worn out 2bbl truck but it still runs great and it cruises like a champ down the highway at 70.

I did call a local muffler shop. Quote for a single exhaust system is $300 and $550 for a dual. Does that sound about right or is that a hose job?

Here is where a decent welder pays for over half of itself real quick. The other half pays ya back by fixing three rust holes... with these trucks, that's likely a given.

... and ya get to keep the welder when yer done!

Miller 140AS.. do it!!

My neighbor is a welder. When I bought the truck everything was falling apart. I remember that he did get under there one day and put the exhaust back in shape. Maybe I'll have him give it a look once more.

What are the 3 rust holes?

That was just an analogy....Three rust holes equals about $350 in time, labor, and materials to cut, patch, grind, fill, finish, and prime.

Just talked to a local muffler guy. He said the stock exhaust in these is a single Y system. Is that true? I always thought duals were stock for my 360.

Thanks pal. You and HIO seem to be all over my questions. Appreciate it. One more.

How important is it to have the full length of the truck behind the tires exit? This guy said he could save me some dough by exiting the side of the bed and not having to pay for 40 feet of pipe.

Opinions welcome.

My 70's dual system exits, one each, in front of the each rear tire.
Kinda loud at the drive-through!

My 73 4x4 uses a cross-over, down the right frame rail, and both exit in front of the right rear tire.

Probably not important then? More likely just how you like it. I'm just gonna work with the guy to come up with something that works and is the most efficient use of my cash. I'm really tired of the glass pack/cherry bomb combo noise.

Any recommendations on mufflers? I stock good enough?

It is personal preference. I opted to take it all the way back, out behind the bumper. Helps keep the noise/fumes behind you where they belong.

Napa sells mufflers pretty cheap. Otherwise you can get a "turbo" muffler for a bit more noise.

Summit carries Flowmaster clones as well as turbo mufflers at low-buck prices.
