What's It Worth

Found a complete 428 in a 67 Mercury Marauder. It runs, but would need to be rebuilt. Any ideas on what this complete engine would be worth?? Like I said, it runs, but would need to be rebuilt. Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Around $1000 possibly more. The main attraction is it would be date code correct possibly for the 67 Shelby GT500's. Depending on the bore and condition of the block, crank, heads etc... it's hard to say exactly. Also the market is sorta soft with the economy. But guys will still pay for correct date code parts. You'd also need to verify it's indeed a 428 and the 67 vintage. If you happen to find a S sandscratch on the back of the block.... cha-ching. Those are a rare batch of 428's that had the crossbolt bosses cast in and supposedly thicker than average cyl walls.

Ignore him...Its worth $50...I'll give you $100

Seriously though...EXCELLENT FIND! And Glenn is right on about the $$$...maybe more if the date codes match someones needs.

That's a great find if it's really a 428 from the standpoint of reselling it or for building up. that was one of the early series that was internally balanced, no extra weight in the dampner or flywheel. If the crank is standard size it could be worth a heap of bucks, The guys building 427/428 stroker motors love that crank. You end up with a 447 cid engine that will run up to 8500 rpm with the right cam and carbs. I love those big thumpin' FEs.

Mel no factory 428 I know of early or late was internally balanced. All were external balanced from the factory. If you came across something like that it was more than likely rebalanced at some point or built with off the shelf parts and balanced from the get go.

The 410 Mercurys, 428 T-Birds and Police interceptor were all internally balanced engines, no counter weights in the dampner or flywheel/flex plates and that includes the '67 Shelby GT500s. I worked for Holman-Moody Marine division in the late '60s as a machinest/engine builder and have built more than a hundred 427 and 428 engines including a few 427 SOHCs. In '68 the GT500KR, CJ Mustangs and Fairlanes had the externally balanced assemblys.
I had a '68 Shelby GT500KR that I built a 427 stroker for. I used the '68 side oiler block that was drilled for hydraulic lifters, a 428 P.I. crank, 428 CJ optional OTC Hyd. drag cam # C80E, NASCAR tunnel port heads with 2 780cfm Holleys with the original C-6 trans. and a 3.90 Detroit locker. It was an unbelievable ride. It would down shift to first at 70 mph light up the tires, shift into second at about 8500rpm and try to go sideways. It was great fun to drive! A real animal.

Too much horsepower is almost enough.

Hmmm that's news to me. I've plucked a few 428's from 66's one being a Tbird and it had the stock flexplate w/counterweight. All FE balancers are neutral balanced so no counterweights used there. So somethings not adding up there.

Bill has posted all the flywheel and flexplate numbers used on the 410 and 428's. Which one's are neutral balanced?

Would someone please crack open a calculator and see just what RPM a C6 tranny with the 3.9 rear gears would be whipping at at 70mph ? Cause frankly...

IIRC C6 1st gear is 2.46:1. Depending on tire height and with 3.90 rear gears you'd be about 8500 with a 26.5" tire and 9400 with a 24" tire @70mph.

I have never seen a stock Ford 410 or 428 that was internally balanced. I think someone thinks this is April 1st.
