I Think I need to replace the front pads on my 04 f250 SD. I dont do a lot of towing and was thinking of buying pads at a local parts dealer. Can you give me some suggestions for brands you like. I think I am correct here I hear a swiching sound when I step on the brakes like the indicators are hitting the rotors. A little grind when it stops. Rotors are fine no shake of the whee or nothin just a light pedal.
I was looking at some major brand names like Raybestos, Oneil and the like.
Or should I order the Hawk Lts online? Can I drive a few days with the swishing noise and not worry about damaging the rotors....How can I check for rotor wear????
What ever pads you get make sure the pads come with the anti rattle clips. Napa didn't that I got. I have seen others that have. If your close and the clip is rubbing, then you might be missing one.
Raybestos severe duty for me.I am very happy with them.
I have heard good things about the Raybestos severe duty pads from the folks that sold me the ART rotors for my 7.3L.
I personaly would not drive with a grinding sound (unless you really do not mind upgrading the rotors also. IIRC - the 04's and before have had some issues w/ their rotors. I believe that the rotors were upgraded in 05 (1/2" in diameter increase, 1/4" in swept radius, more abrasion resistant material, Akebono caliper to a K-H caliper).
I have also heard that Hawk Performance Super Duty Pads are good.
If you want to upgrade the rotors, the ART rotors are fantastic. So are the Powerslot - ProStop Slotted Rotors.
I have also heard that Hawk Performance Super Duty Pads are good.
He said he doesn't do much towing. I would probably stray away from hawks Super Duty's. They aren't the greatest if they aren't heated up properly. Don't get me wrong they are amazing pads at what they are made for. Daily driving is not it though.
I like my Performance Friction pads so far. Only about 1k miles on them though. They also aren't the greatest pads for daily driving though. They like to be warmed up.
I would go with the Hawk LTS pads. They are affordable and great pads.

When you pull the wheels off just look at both sides of the rotor. What you feel is everything. They should be perfectly smooth and not have much of a lip on the top of the rotor. Also before you pull the pads off. Turn the hub a few times. If it is sticking pretty good in sections your rotors are warped.
Removed tires today and rotor are wavy with a little sticking. I can feel the wavyness with my fingers on the surface. So I am going to have to do rotors also. Should I go With Art Rotors even though I dont tow much or is there a better alternative? Thanks LIV for the great post helped me greatly...
I am TOTALLY sold on ART rotors. They really held up for me in the Colorado mountain passes. On one trip down into Ouray, I had them boiling hot and the pads were stinking bad - no issues at all with rotor warpage or loss of braking power.
is there a difference between 13" and 14.5" rotors other than the diameter obviously....can I put either size on the truck or do I have to match what I have???
I got mine from Diesel Manor they are a site sponser. Great customer service and fast shipping.
All 4 w/ performance friction pads ended up being about $900 shipped. I wouldn't go with the performance friction pads if you don't tow though. I don't think diesel manor stocks hawk pads so you'll have to order them from somewhere else. I think if you went with ART rotors and the Hawk LTS pads you'll have an unbeatable combo.
I don't know what the stock diameter is but I'd stick with that the stock caliper isn't going to support a bigger rotor. If you order from Diesel Manor you'll order it by your year so you can't mess it up. I actually posted pictures of my new setup. I'll try and dig it up for you.
Make sure when you put it all back together you lube the hell out of those caliper pins. I had to replace two of my front ones they were completely seized up.
