(I searched the posts and only found one post specifically for tips, but it did not tell me what I wanted to know.)
I have a 78F150 with 351m. It has the stock manifolds and true dual exhaust exiting behind each rear wheel. Each side has a Flowmaster muffler si/so. Judging by the noise level probably 40series.
The exhaust is very loud, but not mellow. I want the low/mellow rumble that some of these late model mustangs and shuvit trucks have. Will a long and wide exhuast tip mellow out and lower my exhaust notes? I don't want to waste money on tips that just look good, but do nothing for a low mellow tone.

They really do mellow out the exhaust note. In addition. they look AWESOME
One reason that you might not have the sound you want is because you have true duals. On mustangs and Newer trucks most people run a Y pipe and duals after the cat to keep from failing inspections. These systems have a nice mellow tone even if they are totally straght piped. Most tips do give a nice tone if they are 3" or bigger.
Borla has been known for making a tip that will mellow out the sound and cool down exhaust gases. They start at $25.00 each and go up to around $80.00 each.
I dont know how much the tips change the sound quality because i had them installed the same time as i did my Flowmasters, but "Ractive" makes a Nice Clean Stainless Steel Tip.

Nice looking tips. Can I ask how much they cost? My local shop quoted $60 for two chrome tips and $70 for two SS tips installed. Also, what kind of truck are your tips on? From that pic it looks like they are exiting behind the rear wheel and smooth fender of a '50 something truck?
if you want to have the low mellow sound, your gonna have to run an h-pipe like the mustangs, all that is is a pipe that runs between your two seperate pipes, this will smooth out your exhaust note, and make it much deeper, if you just put tips on there, your not going to be able to tell much of a diffrence, thats how all these mustangs and new trucks running around get their sound, they either have a y pipe or an h-pipe to blend the sounds of the two diffrent sides together

Thanks Draws! Nice SUV! I guess that's the average price to get ss tips installed. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting ripped off.
Good points about the crossover pipe. It makes sense that if all eight cylinders exhaust are tied together that the sound would get mixed and deeper. I didn't think about that. Well, that's what I was going to do first, is get the crossover pipe installed and then later, some tips. Hopefully I can get that crossover pipe installed tomorrow!
