I need to replace the shocks on my 1996 F250 HD 4X4. Any sugestions? The suspension is stock. Highway comfort is most important, then trailer towing, load capability, and lastly, some offroad ability. I will be replacing Rancho RS 5000 with about 35,000 miles on them. Rancho sent me replacement bushings last year and the fronts have failed again already (3000 miles).
What failed on the Ranchos, the bushings? Or did they leak? I have the RSXs with 10K miles on them, with some offroading, theyre still fine.
I think Bilstiens are the best, but pricey, may be not worth it for the truck. Check out KYB, or Koni. I havent had any experience with Monroe or Gabriel.
You may want to look around in the Steering and Suspension forum, do a search for shocks.
The bushings failed after about 3000 miles. I replaced the original rubber ones last year with eurathane(I'm a bad speller) ones that Rancho sent to me after I complained. They turned to junk pretty quick! I drive mostly highway with some rutted dirt roads and an occasional trip into New York City.
ONE WORD " MONROE", i have been workin on cars and trucks for twenty years, for as long as i can remember i have used monroes, there a great shock for the money "sensa trac" ;gas magnums for trucks and the new one called the" reflex". any problems you can return them for a replacement never a question asked some of the best prices on monroe shocks ive found at rockauto.com...goodluck
I put Monroe Reflex shocks on the front of my 88 F150 because it was bouncing when hitting bumps at high speeds. I cannot believe the difference those shocks made! It handles better than my Dad's 98 F150 now!
Monroe Reflex, picked them up on the Internet for $37 each, going to put the rear shocks on this spring...
I have always gone with Monroe because they are cheap name-brand replacements for stock with a lifetime warranty. I have never had to use the warranty. Motorcraft have failed early (10,000 to 40,000 miles) on two different Fords and Delco on a Chevy.
I had Rancho RS5000 on it before. I was not happy with them. I ordered the Sensitracs because a friend was happy with his and because they were very cheap from rockauto.com. I really wanted to upgrade to Bilstiens but I'm short on cash due to a wedding and home purchase last summer.
Installed the Sensetracs today. The trucks rides MUCH smoother.
It even stays in the same lane when I go over bumps. With the softer shocks the trucks feels a little loose on turns.
Thanks for the up date. I thing I am go to get the Reflex. I find a place other than rockauto for k37.12 while Sensatracs is $30. I am sure either one is fine with me, since mine is leaking .
The Reflex also claim 19% less body roll, which is why I put them on the front. I am planning to put them on the rear when I can get ahead with the money. They do ride a lot better with no nose dive in a hard stop. Brother in law put them on his 2000 chevy to soften his harsh ride. He is well pleased with the results.
