GVWR question

Hello. I would like someone with the XLT or up trim on an F350 swr that has a gvwr ratting of 11,400 or 11,500 lbs, not sure what it is. To tell me what their sticker in the door rates each axel, thanks.

I have an XL and I believe the only difference is tires. Does anyone know if this is true?

The axle ratings are the same for the F-350 regardless of trim level. The only difference on the F-350 is from SRW to DRW. Here's a link to the specs. The rear axle is rated at 7280 lbs. on SRW regardless of GVWR or trim level.

Then when an swr F350 has a higher GVWR than another the only difference is the tires?

The GVWR is determined by the drivetrain components as well. The 5.4, 6.8, and 6.4 have different GVWRs. The tires only a small part of the bigger picture. There is also a 10,000 GVWR package from Ford as an option for the F-350. If you go to the Ford Build and Price page off their website, you can build and spec a truck there and when you get to the powertrain page, you will see the choices there for the GVWR. It will be listed next to the "payload package".

Here is a link to the '09 order guides for the F-350. Also, the link to the Ford spec page and the link to the build and price page.

interesting, the 5.4 gasser has a heavier payload than 6.4 diesel, 4030 vs 3670 yet the gvwr is 10800 vs 11400? Is all the extra weight of the 6.4 in the motor??

For comparison I have a F 350 dually and my rear axle is 9,000 lbs, front 6000 lbs and the GVWR IS 13,000 lbs

That's the primary culprit...the weight of the 6.4 and associated hardware such as coolers, etc.

Alot goes in to GVWR. When I got my old 250 I got a hold of the builders manual for the trucks. My F250 4x4 diesel had 6000# axels front and rear. A gas F350 had 5200# fronts. you had to go to a F350 with the max front service package to get a heavier axle at 6200# IIRC. Things like diesel vs gas motors, 4x4 vs 2wd, heavy service packages, plow prep package and so on change the springs and axels and effect the GVWR. Heck even rear gears change it. My new 550 is down rated to 17800# from 19800# because I chose 4.30 rears as opposed to 4.88's, yet my total GCWR is 26000 compared to a 350's 23500 with 3.73's!

I'd love to find a copy of one of those manuals for the new trucks, but the dealers don't seam to have any clue what I am talking about. F one dealer told me I couldn't put a plow on a 4x4 F550 diesel because the front axels was only rated to 5200#!!! Thats AFTER he supposedly looked into the suspension options and got back to me!

Actually, according to Ford now, the axle ratings are standard across the board. Meaning basically, while the GVWR and spring rates may change, the axle rating is a constant. In the 2wd F250/350, the front axle is rated at 5250 lbs. In the 4wd, the same two trucks are rated at 6000 lbs. The rear in the F-250 2wd and 4wd is rated at 6200 lbs. and the rear in the F-350 2wd and 4wd is rated at 7280. These are for the SRW trucks. In the F-350 DRW, the front is rated at 5250 for the 2wd and 6000 for the 4wd, while the rear in both 2 and 4wd is rated at 9000. These axle ratings are for gas and/or diesel.

The things like the heavier springs, etc. will not cause the GVWR to vary but the added weight of them can increase the GVW.
