I own a 1997 f-150, 4.2 litre, 4 wheel drive. The speedometer quits working at 38 mph and sometimes does not return to 0 even after the engine is off. I have replaced the speed sensor but it did not cure the problem. Could it be a bad ground? I have found a couple of instrument clusters at salvage yards, but they have been out of trucks with v-8's. My truck is a base model with no tachometer. Are the clusters interchangeable?? The other guages in the cluster work fine, it's just the speedometer.
I haven't found any answers myself to a very similar problem. I'll keep looking and let you know what I found out, in the meantime, I emailed Bob's Speedometer, a local shop here and asked a few questions and I've not gotten anything back yet, but it was a Saturday I emailed them. As far as I know, you CAN interchange the clusters, but I don't know for sure, I couldn't find any info.
I did get some info from a senior ford mechanic and he did tell me that the clusters are interchangeable. I found a cluster at a salvage yard and will pick it up in the next day or two. The mechanic told me that the motor in the speedo is not functioning properly since i have already replaced the speed sensor and all of the other guages work. I've got my fingers crossed that this will work. I am surprised that he told me the tachometer will be functional with the v-6 engine even though it came out of a v-8. I'll let you know how it turns out.
