I have 1966 f100 with a long bed and wanted to convert to a short or flare side.My question is if its a direct swap or will i need to do some fabrication? Thanks
The Show Trucks on Spike did a 8ft to 6ft conversion on an old chevy. They showed how to notch the frame and how they shortened the bed. Seemed to be straight forward, but a lot of work.
Honestly, you would be much better off transferring everything to a shortbed frame. I wouldn't try to move an axle further than a few inches in either direction. The axle "bumps" in the frame will work against you if you try to pull the thirdmember in that far.
I wouldn't even think about cutting the center of the frame out. No matter how well it was braced or welded, strength would be compromised. The other option is to build a new frame, but unless you are planning much more radical change than just having a short bed, it wouldn't be worth it.
