Honestly, you would be much better off transferring everything to a shortbed frame. I wouldn't try to move an axle further than a few inches in either direction. The axle "bumps" in the frame will work against you if you try to pull the thirdmember in that far.
I wouldn't even think about cutting the center of the frame out. No matter how well it was braced or welded, strength would be compromised. The other option is to build a new frame, but unless you are planning much more radical change than just having a short bed, it wouldn't be worth it.

rich, You will be light years ahead to buy a nice shortbed truck. You are talking a major undertaking.
It is a buyers market right now, you should be able to get a good buy on one. Take your time, don't rush and one will come to you.
