How to retireve codes?

I've got an 04 6.0, check engine light came on while pulling about 6K worth of trailer. I saw a small puff of black smoke and had some mild surging. After truck cooled down I restarted it and the light was gone. My 5/100 warranty runs out in March so I thought I'd take it to the dealer. They kept it and changed the bed plate seal but said it did not save any codes. My question is is there a relativley inexpensive code reader we can use to retrieve codes or is that something I should not drop my money into? Thanks in advance.

Most auto parts stores will loan code readers (although I have heard some say that they won't unless you have a CEL). Autoenginuity makes one that is most commonly discussed. I have seen group buys get the price down a little on one of their models. IIRC - check out this web site:
