The real question may be why the engine is running so hot. And why your primary cooling system cant keep up.

what is the info for the vehicle?
trucks always run hot.. and before trying to diagnose a cooling problem.. everything on the coolant systems been replaced.. and from what ive heard from other guys with the same model & engine its well known for running hot..

87 s10 with 2.5L 4cyl.. aka as the Iron Duke... engine was originally made to run in the Pontiac Fieros which were known for catching fire due to over heating... due to the lack of space in the engine compartments the engines were designed with a 3 qt oil pan (its biggest flaw).. GM never fixed the problem.. consencious among the s10 guys say the 3 qt pans is the source of the problem on that engine..

Ok, if that is the case then i would say an oil cooler would help alot. Not only does it cool the oil but it will give you a good amount of extra capacity, especially if you get a large one.

and you could always put a remote filter or even a double filter for more oil capacity.

Good Luck

thats one of my biggest hopes there... would really like to get a 4th qt into there... just havent been able to find many people that are actually running oil coolers on their vehicles that didnt come stock with it... my old 79 surburban had one on it but was mainly because it was ordered that way for the fact we were planning to do alot of towing with it..

had thought of doing a remote one as well... but not sure if i want to go through that hassel or not..

was looking at a Derale kit awhile back but can find it anymore... might have to go digging through my old summit books again... or just look at some of the others that are out now...

The oil cooler I had in my Tahoe was the largest I could find. I believe it was a Hayden which costs about $50 - $70 now. I had trouble getting it to fit behind the grill because of its size, About 2 ft X 1 ft. The tubes were crossover design which is better than capillary as it doesn't affect your oil pressure or flow. But even through the tubes were large it did't hold much oil. I was thinking it woud add a quart but when I checked it before installation it was only about 1/3 of a quart. It will bring your temps down. Adding a larger transmission cooler will also help when towing. I did this and put an electric fan in front of my trans cooler too.

think ive seen the name hayden before... mighta been one of the companys that came up the other day... will have to look again... i know the one derale had was about 82 sum bucks for the complete kit if i remember right...

my trannys a manual so i dont really need a cooler for it.. 4 spd izusu tranny that GM bought the design for and got muncie to build for them.. geared extremely low though... like i said 4th i run 3400 rpm at 70mph.. and when im puttering around neighborhoods i can do 25 in 4th as well.. that point im just letting the idle drive it... widest range gear ive ever seen before...

thanks again for the info there randy...

wow! If you can't add a cooler and they don't make a pan, what are the odds you can hook up a dual bypass filter to increase capacity without causing oil starvation? that has to be good for .75-1 qt....install fatter lines
