just curious if anyone has added them to their trucks? and If theyve seen any drop in their Antifreeze temps from the cooler oil temps helping the engine run a bit cooler?
Your coolant system is the key to keeping your truck in the right temp. A vehicle starts running hot from idling or pulling a heavy load at low speed in most applications.
a vehicle running with too little oil also can run hot... Oil serves a dual purpose... it lubricates and removes heat from the critical areas... if it fails to do so in either area your engine will fail as well...
An oil cooler for the engine is more important for an air cooled engine and if you are low on oil, the oil cooler won't do you any good.
ohh i dont mean low as in not filling it up when it runs down.. i mean low as in mfg didnt make the pan big enough... and really isnt any aftermarket pans for it... my trucks only got a 3 qt pan on it.... hoping if i add the cooler i could squeeze a 4th into there and also get them oil temps along with its running temp to drop during the summer...
Interesting. I don't think it will lower your oil temps but again it will depend on how you are using it. Adding one will not hurt, no question about that.
its mostly just a toy truck... never tow anything with it cuz it cant pull much.. (wish i could use it to pull my stang but its too heavy for it... )... every once in a great while ill get to fill up the bed either helping my neighbor set up for her art shows.. or helping a friend move.. ect ect...
winters ill use it as a DD cuz its about the only time i can really drive it and have the engine temp stay around 190... only time it goes out in the summer is when i have to... id prolly dive it more often in the summer if the a/c worked lol...
My '82 LTD S Police package came with an oil cooler from the factory. It removed some heat from the oil for sure, you could put your hand between it and the radiator and feel the hot air stream; too hot to keep your hand there for long. I plan on adding one to my 460 when I find a factory adapter for my truck.

check out FRP.... they make them for the 460... summit also has some universal kits too.. but summits are rated by hp... think FRP's might be as well but not sure.. would have to look them up again...
Several years ago I owned a chevy Tahoe that I used for pulling a trailer. I was at almost the max weight and after installing a oil temp gauge I found while climbing the Baker grade in California in summer heat (105+) my oil temp would go up to 300 degrees. After having a stress attack thinking the engine was going to blow I made it home and installed a large engine oil cooler the next week. On my next trip in the same weather and location the temp maxed at 265 degrees. Thats a 35 degree difference and that I sold that Tahoe with 130,000 miles.

cool... 35* drop sounds pretty good to me... thanks for the info there... btw whats the baker grade? that a nickname for steep hil?
The Baker grade is a 7 percent climb at Baker California on I-15 to Las Vegas. The climb is about 22 miles and the temp in summer can exceed 125 degrees on the road. Car companies use it to test cooling systems. My weight with vehicle and trailer was about 11,800 and the max gross for the vehicle was 12,000. I was pushing the Tahoe to its limit. I now have a F-250 Diesel pulling an 11,800 pound fifth wheel and still get oil temps of 260 degrees dispite the trucks internal oil cooler. And it still stresses me out.
wow.. thats pretty neat about them using it as a testing ground... most times in the summer around here were in the mid to high 90's but the last few summers weve been edging into the 100's.. last summer i think we actually hit 110 for a couple days...
i dont have an oil temp one on mine but im pretty sure it gets pretty hot.. summers i have to run 20w50 in mine cuz it just turns 10w-30 and 10w-40 to water with as hot as it runs.. winters i can run em.. just not the summer... i hate seeing that coolant needle buried in the red during the summers... am hoping if i added an oil cooler itd help drop those temps some...
ya, an oil cooler will help the engine cooler, but it helps keep the lubricating ability of the oil higher. The hotter the oil the less ability it has to lubricate.
The real question may be why the engine is running so hot. And why your primary cooling system cant keep up.
