Does anyone on here have any idea what a good running stock 292 or 312 is worth? It`s got about 37500 on it and, of course, has the normal
oil leaks. Also has a Ford-O-Matic behind it.
If anyone has recently purchased one I`d like to know what you paid for it. (ball park) Thanks.
Hi Gusso/Gary
I own 4 56s all with yblocks. I just think the yblock value is more when a guy already has a old ford truck. I mean is....most today don't want a yblock. Unless you are keeping an old 53-60s ford running stockwise.
I would think 200--500.00 bucks for a good running engine is about all they are worth.
I see you rebuilt yours in your gallery, and it looks great.
Are you thinking of going 302/351?
Bill
It really depends if its a 292 or a 312. 312 blocks are getting HTF. It also depends if the trans is an air cooled or uses engine coolant to cool. The air cooled auto transmissions are less desireable.
Even though it runs, its still a junk yard engine without going thru. You drop it in and the next thing you know you have a rear main leaking, no oil to the heads, freeze plugs leaking ETC. You get the idea.

4V intake? Truck or car engine?
$100.00- $800.00 it depends what it is

You should know by now, any 312 is a Thunderbird engine, or Merc Police Interceptor engine!
Just like any 4-bolt SBC is a rare Z-whatever hi-po model, not just an old truck block.
I've heard his Y-block run and it sounds great, he told me that he's put those miles on it virtually trouble free. Gary doesn't own junk so I know it's a good reliable engine. I'd put it on Craigslist for at least a grand, some rat rodder would likely snap it up.
Gary...The other thing to consider is--you are in California and you guys use your old vehicles more (12 months a yr) compared to us rust-belt folks.
It will be worth more there. Although a used engine is still a good engine....unlike some that think all engines have got to rebuilt.... I am not among that thinking. I would buy it in a heartbeat for 500 if it were near me.
Iwould clean it up and paint it and vroom --stick it in and drive it.

dain i'm gonna run an ad claiming my fe's are old hipo 428 interceptor's now that you gave me the idea fella's .......... they aint no run of the mill 360's now !!!!!!! LOL!!!!! i sold the ones i had for like 3-4oo or so . i can't 'member . a 292 , a 272 , a 239 that was locked up , and a set of red painted heads with dual factory springs and a fresh valve job from a 312 { turns out they were worth some scratch and i didna know !!! oh well live and learn } to norm , abuddy of mine . and now i am / was looking for one to use as a temp in the 53 till i get the flatty done the right way . stu had one so .........
Thanks for all the responses. A little more info: The engine was represented to me to be a 312ci. Can`t prove that until I pull it and look at rear end of crankshaft. It could be a 292. Don'T know. It`s running a 2100 autolite carb and, again, it runs really well.
I`m presently rebuilding 312ci to put in my `56. when it`s ready I`ll pull engine and install the rebuild. Then sell the older y block. I`m really just looking for a fair price for buyer and seller. Thanks again for all your input.
Gusso--If you were in Ohio, I would buy it from you,and hopefully both be happy. I cannot justify shipping it to Ohio.
I know there are folks that have alot of these engines and they sell for 200-up. Just because most want a 302/351 or bigger.
The quote is ''get as much as you can'' and you will if you find the right buyer.
Some though, want way too much and then cry because folks will not pay that for it. I hope your 312 runs great. Bill
Bill,
Thanks for your input. The thing is, I`m not in a position that I must sell the engine.
But if someone wants or needs a good running y block, and all you guys can help me to determine a fair price for buyer and seller I`d be happy to sell it. I know this is a very subjective conversation, so we may not come to a firm, fair, price. But, it`s worth the effort. Thanks everyone.
