mine used to do that, i used a good quality synthetic fuel system cleaner called Quickleen distributed by Mercury Marine (thats what we sell at work). My dealer recommended using a fuel system cleaner and the brand that they recomended (chevron techron) made no difference. Used quickleen religiously for about a month with every fillup and it has been accurate ever since. drove all the way to florida and the gauge never gave me a problem.

What else does QUICKLEEN do ? Is it a 2 stroke additive ? AND did you use it only for the fuel guage ?
Quickleen is for either 2 or 4 stroke engines. At service school they tell us that its the closest thing to a "mechanic in a can". It works great on efi and carb engines. works great on cleaning injectors and carbs, removing carbon from the combustion chambers. i have personally disassembled and inspected inboard engines (and their carburetors) before & and after using this product and they are quite a bit cleaner than an untreated engine. i used it just to see if it would disolve "gunk on the sending unit" as it was described by my dealer preventing my sending unit from working correctly, because ive seen this stuff remove minor varnishing and "gunk" from the inside of carburetors. and it did improve the operation of my gas gauge. i wasn't experiencing any poor running conditions on my engine, but since i have lots of experience with the product i knew that it wouldn't do any harm. i wouldn't hesitate to use it again or to tell people to use it in their vehicles if they suspect an injector or carb issue or a fouled spark plug. I add the reccomended amount to my tank at every oil change just for good measure!
