Hey, has anyone out there taken on the TSB cam phasor repair themselves? I've read the TSB, but didn't want to buy the full repair manual until I knew that it was a doable job... Anyone?
What are you trying to do? Is your phaser making noise???? What type of warranty do you have left? there are many options (aftermarket wise) that can take care of it. That is if you like modding your vehicle, why not do a little bit while your in there?? They make tons of camshafts for these engines, and there are a few companies that have phaser lock-outs (will stop phaser noise, and also lock out VCT)......Livernois, MMR, and BBR all carry the billet lockouts for the 3v engine. The only downside to doing a cam swap and phaser mods is you need to get a tune for it, but its WELL worth it.
I have never done a pickup truck, but have done many 3v mustangs (same set-up, just a 4.6)........Im curious as to why nobody really does cams in a truck (i think it would be cool).
But If you just want to stay factory and install a new phaser, its not that bad of a job.
Actually I have a Roushcharger in a box waiting to go in when I have a free weekend and was thinking that while I had the engine bay cleared, I should take a stab at the phasers (because they are noisey). What I would like to know is how invasive is the job? Does the front cover have to come off, or is it like the cam position sensor on the 4.6L Mustang motor (easy pull and swap)?
hi there, i've beem looking at buying a 04-06 f-150 but everyone i look at has (what i thought we're noisy lifters) but from what your disscussing sounds like the cam phasers are what making all the noise is this a serious problem?
Joonya, If you goto the website above (scroll down to episode 22)and have decent speakers it will explain all the normal and abnormal noises of the 5.4
Very good post 98greensi. Episode 22 is very informative regarding the make up of the Cam phaser and the normal and abnormal noises made in the truck. Mine sounds similar to the lash adjuster noise which to them is normal. My issue is I don't want the noise. The acting is horrible but the information is great.
Interestingly, my wife has a 2005 Mercedes, don't get me started with the noises that engine makes upon start-up. But it runs like a scalded dog when you put your foot into it.
