first of I want to thank Plowhand, onefarmer and JOE_13894 for their help. I have tried what you said and I still can't get the alternator to charge. I have the new alternator back on the truck now and have worked most of the night trying to find the problem. I'm a pretty good mechanic but I don't know anything about wiring. Does anybody have any other ideas or what I might try. I have a 1997 f-350 dually with a 7.3 l diesel. Thanks again for everyone's help
You need a 12volt test light or volt meter. With the key on and the engine off, Test the big terminal on the back of the alt and the two wires in the plastic plug in. They should all show near battery voltage.
If they do, there is four screws on the back of the alt that holds the regulator on. One of these on the regulator will have an arrow pointing to it saying ground to test. Start the engine and ground the screw, this will full field the alt bypassing the regulator. If the alt now charges the regulator is suspect.
If all the alt still won't charge then the alt is suspect.
there is a 3 wire connector and a single wire connector on back of the alternator, in the 3 wire you should find a purple wire with a white stripe, this wire should have 12 volts going to it. in that same connector there is a light greenish colored wire with a red(if i rememberd right) stripe on it. this should have power only when the key is on or truck is running. that wire also runs through the "alt" light on your dash. the 3rd wire in the connector is the white one that runs right from the 3 wire connector to the sinlge wire connector on the alternator, this wire should have roughly 6-7 volts.

What if colored wire with a red stripe on it has power when the key position is off, what causes this problem?
