From: Healdsburg ca,
rear brake question

so i was driving my truck today and i couldn't help to think that even for my truck having 4wheel drum brakes/lift/tires. it stops like a train. so i get under my truck and realize my back brakes aren't even hooked up.

so there are the brake cables/lines going from the back drums that go up to a bracket by the transfer case, but nothing going from bracket to the brake system up front. where is a good place to get this stuff?? i live near a pick n pull would that be best??

thanks!!!

I think you may be looking at the emergency brakes. The regular brakes, are hydraulic, and narrow steel lines are clipped to the rear differential, with a rubber hose running up to the frame. The 4 wheel drums should work well, not like a new truck, but not so poorly that you would ever feel nervous. Sounds like you have brakes that could use some work. Just be careful, as the braking system is the most important system in your truck.
As far as the e-brake cables. The pull your part at the junkyard is one way to go, but IMO, the e-brakes in these trucks don't work well, and you would be lucky to find an ebrake that isn't rusted solid (even in CA) For the rest of the braking system. Don't use junkyard parts. Brake shoes, master cylinders, slave cylinders, springs etc. can be found at you local parts store, or online from the FTE sponsors!
Good luck!

I see you have older ford pickups. Are they restored or built? because I have a 60' f500 and need to find a catalog, or web site to buy aftermarket parts for them.

Hey thanx I will check it out. But do you think they will have stuff for my f500. I dont think to many people restore or build them to often. Also I would like to sell some of the original stuff out of it, and another old f600 with the line 6 I think 248 c.i. Anyway do you think I can sell some of that stuff. Its all in relativeley good shape. Motors are complete, rear, and front axles other stuff too.

For parts for the bigger trucks, try Vintage Truck. I think they have a web site but I am refering to the magazine which covers a lot of big stock stuff and there are quite a few advertisers in the back of the mag.
