Mileage much better than expected

Got my new 2008 F-250, 6.4, Crew Cab out on the freeway yesterday for the first time. On a 200 mile trip it got 17.9mpg one way and 16.8mpg on the return. This truck has only 500 miles on it, and has gone through one DPF clean cycle. When it went through regen I was in town getting 12.4mpg and it only dropped to 12.3mpg when regen was done. I am very surprised as I expected worse. Will it get worse? This is as good or better than the 2002 7.3 I traded in!

Your driving habits have alot to do with mileage but once it is broken in you should see a change for the better. That is still decent mileage, any mods to it?

The truck is totally stock except for levelling spacers in the front. I noticed that when it went into DPF cleaning mode today the avg. mpg took a little hit but it is still better than my 7.3 was. Hope your right, that it gets better as it gets broken in and loosens up. Looks like you are a firefighter? I started out as a firefighter in San Jose but transferred to the police dept. after two years. In later years I regretted the change, but after 31 years of service I have a good retirement and a career to be proud of. I am sure you are proud of your job also. You should be!

I have an '08 with 70000 miles on it and I get about the same mileage you state. 17 or so hwy, 12 or so city. 90% of my driving is interstate towing one of 4 trailers I use for work and the weights range from 4000 to 16000 pounds. My mileage towing ranges from 8 to 11 with very little change while going through the cleanout cycle. That regen cycle really kills the turbo boost though and it can be frustrating but I can put up with it considering how nice the truck drives and handles the weight.

Mine is a F-250 by the way, crew cab 4x4.

Ruschejj: I agree with you this new truck does drive beautiful. Very quiet and smooth and very stable. I also noticed reduced boost while in regen. That could be very interesting. We have an 11000lb toy hauler and some pretty steep grades and high passes around here. With the higher cylinder temps and egt when towing the fuel should burn much cleaner and hopefully not go into regen so much. I have a Peterbilt with a CAT engine and it runs visibly cleaner with egt at 900 and puts out a little smoke in town when it is running between 600-750deg. I haul alot at 105,000lbs and the hotter I can keep it the better it runs and I get the best mileage. All the way up to 5.5 MPG!

I have been pretty disappointed in the MPG on my 08 F250. I mean it really sucks, like 10 or 11 on the highway. Its got about 3400 miles. This morning I had a 40 mile drive to work, and it was so frickin foggy I doubt visibility was 1/4 mile. Well traffic was moving pretty slow, about 55. So I reset the MPG computer and finished the drive at 55, about 1500 rpm. The computer said 19.3! On the way back home the I did the same, but set the cruise at 68, the engine running about 1700 rpm, and the turbo putting out on the average of 10 psi...and the puter again surprised me at 16.5.

To say i'm usually an aggressive driver is a little of an understatement, I'm usually on the accelerator much more than the brake. And I have been known to exceed the posted speed limit at times (). So it proved a couple of things to me, 1) this engine is capable of getting pretty reasonable MPG, and 2) I usually drive like a maniac!

I didn't buy this truck because it was economical to drive, but I'm pretty sure if that was important I could fit a Prius in the back.

Mine gets 19-20 on the hiway, 18-19 on combined city/hiway. But it drops to 12-14 with a 3500 pound camper in the bed and towing a boat.

96,000, but that's my Dodge Cummins 4WD dually. My Ford's getting 8mpg. Your diesel should do much better when it's broken in. Remember, diesels need to be loaded heavily to properly seat the rings. Pull a pretty big trailer with it and it should break in sooner. I pulled a 34' Wells Cargo fully loaded for about a thousand miles to break mine in.

I just fueled up this afternoon, drove 60 miles highway @ 65mph on the gps, 17mpg when I arrived, empty box. Coming back it went into regen upon leaving, cruise set at 65mph again regen finished and I was down to 15.4mpg! Truck has 7500 miles on it. I find you really have to baby the accelerator, hopefully it gets better when broken in.

I just got a new F350 RX-4 crew with the 6.4L and I've been averaging around 13 MPG around town with some highway driving mixed in on my 15 mile commute to work. I only have 500 miles on the truck, so it's far from broken in. The mileage figures that some of you guys are experiencing offer some encouragement as I'm coming from a 2003 Duramax that consistently got mileage in the upper teens (20-ish on the road).

I've noticed that stop and go driving seems to have a huge impact on mileage -- much more so than with the Chevy/Duramax Maybe it's the weight, gearing, emissions equipment or all of the above, but you can really notice the in-dash mileage computer going down when you are in stop and go situations.

I'm hoping I continue to see some improvement in fuel mileage...I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

Heck, my 5.4L does that too. Drops at least 1.5 mpg in stop n go.
