I have a 94 bronco 5.8 auto. And the tranny started shifting hard from 1st to 2nd. I have found some posts on this and it says that the truck is in limp mode. So I checked the codes and only came up with code 33 EGR not opening? Would that code cause the truck to go into limp mode or is there something more wrong? Vacuum leak cause the tranny problem? Also the truck seams like it has an engine brake, up to about 40mph when I let off the gas it feels like I'm stepping on the brakes. Thanks
I think it's going to sit for a couple months. I don't have the time or place to work on it. Also I guess some or all of the info that I had found is wrong. I'm pretty sure of the vac leak and the truck is shifting screwed up. The truck is near perfect with the exception of a few mechanical gremlins. It only has 98k on it so I doubt it is anything major. I'll keep searching for what is wrong and tackle it in a few months when the weather breaks. Any suggestions would be helpful thanks.
No vac line on the E4OD, electronic controlled. Code 33 is a separate issue.
Engine braking only occurs when in "D" not "OD", so I'd look at the MLPS - Manual Lever Position Sensor as a possible cause of the problem.
Does it shift to OD at about 45mph? Be sure you're not confusing TCC lock up with the shift to OD. TCC lock up should occur at about 35 at cruse, even under moderate/normal acceleration, heavy acceleration would delay it.
Also TC lockup tends to happen with the shift to drive so it can be hard to notice.
How are the rest of the shifts, how does it act shifting to drive? Holds second to long, then suddenly shifts to drive like it was "stuck"?
How does the speedo needle read, is it rock steady or jumps around up and down?
The PSOM - Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module could be suspect but from what you've said so far I lean toward the MLPS.
The truck is shifting pretty hard from 1st to 2nd and it feels like maybe it's not going into overdrive. One day it shifts hard and other days it doesn't. But now it does it all the time. I only have maybe 100 miles on the truck since I picked it up and only taken it out maybe 4 times. I just want to fix it up right and keep the truck as close to stock as possible. I've been thinking of getting a Raptor, so I want to get this truck right before I let it go, probably next fall. So I have plenty of time.
The reason I asked how you pulled the codes is that some proceedures do not access trans. codes. Good advice from danr1 and it could also be a throttle position sensor. Do you notice any engine problems?
It may also be useful to check and clean the electrical plug connectors at the trans.
