I posted this thread in the older 7.3L fourm and got no replys. So I'm hoping this newer 7.3L forum might help me out a little bit more.
I've got a 1996 F-350 4x4, Auto, DRW with a flatbed on it. Ford made it as a cab and chassis truck. With just over 208k on it I've been having problems keeping it running at idle. It's got a new fuel filter and clean oil but keeps stalling out at idle. In the last 5k its also had a new water pump, CPS, PCM, alternator and batteries.
Sometimes it idles for an hour, other times 5 minutes before it just shuts off. It seems to stay running longer if all of my lights are off as well as the radio. Also, sometimes if its idling for awhile, when I go to put it in drive or reverse then it stalls out. No idea whats going on. My guess is electrical, but I don't know for sure. It also fires right back up everytime, and seems as if nothing was wrong. Never shut off at a stop light or sign. Always happened after a couple of mintues.
Is it an automatic? If so, and it never dies when in gear idling, try idling it in neutral with the parking brake on and see if it does the same thing. If not, maybe the OBS has an inside steering column wiring short too. If it is a stick, disregard all of this post as
It might be a fuel problem, but i do not know. It kinda romps two or three times and then dies. My girl friend said it did it when it was idling in with the parking lights on and she turned the dome light on and it stalled out.
It is an automatic and always seems to die in park. I'm going to try the neutral thing tomorrow and let you guys know. Thanks for the help!
Keep playing with the dome light (including in nuetral). Could be a ground issue. I've got a 94 F450 at work with a 460 that had an issue where it would die if you turned the headlights on in park. Turned out to be a loose ground and the extra voltage from the lights killed the motor. Don't quite understand it, but it's been a year with no more stalling issues.
Hmmm, while we wait. Douglas DC-9, isn't that the old C-47? I have jumped out of that airplane. Any stories to go with the user name? Ahhh, the memories. Chit, I am starting to sound like an old dude.
Your thinking of the DC-3 which was the passenger version of the C-47. It's been claimed to have been one of the most reliable aircraft ever in production. Those birds haven't been made for over 50+ years and are still flying today.
The DC-9 is what I learned to fly with. I would have been an airline pilot but getting type 1 diabetes put an end to that. Google a DC-9 and you'll see what they look like. Northwest Airlines, I believe is the last commercial airline to still use them in the skys today. Biggest reason was that they're pretty bad on fuel... just like our 7.3's. LOL
