If your flow is not that great i would try a water pump they are not that expensive.Your flow comes from that pump i have seen the fins on the pump just disentigrated not allowing flow even if the pump is not leaking it can still be bad. also radiator cap can still be holding pressure but not enough if it is popping too soon it won't be building enough preesure either. The flush idea is good as well especially if heater core is blocked the cycle of coolant can't be completed. You could even test that by getting a piece of heater hose connect at water pump fitting and run it to fitting on intake run truck an see if it overheats. Then take just a little compressed air blow through one end of the heater hoses and feel the end of the other hose should come out just as fast as u are putting it in then swap hoses an blow the other way. Just start air flow slow an build your way up because if their is blockage u could blow up core slow will allow u too clear core of chunkies if there are any
another easy way to check water pump flow is pop one of the heater hoses off stick it in an antifreeze jug and crank the truck see if it is pushing fluid.
may want to pressure test the cap most parts stores in the states will let you rent tools, dont know about canada. but they should have a coolant system pressure tester.
and last may want to double check that thermostat use an old coffe can put it in there and dump some water in the can and put it on the stove watch to make sure thermostat actually opens.
IM gettin the rad redone tomorrow i already flushed the motor out like crazy and alot of **** came out even a tiny stick lol so i think with all the junk that came out it must be the pump im gonna try and find one of thos tomorrow to ill keep u guys posted and thanx again for the input
68-72 most parts interchange. 73-79 some parts interchange.
Regarding your overheating issue, it's also possible (but rare) that the last guy knocked the freeze plugs into the block instead of pulling them out when replacing them. I suspect though that flushing the rad and engine and replacing the waterpump will cure it.
WWWWEEEELLLLLLLLL got the rad flushed and i think it made it worse than b4 lol gonna try water pump tomorrow im juss hoping its not the head gasket juss cuz i didnt wanna take it apart lol
no its puking it out im juss catching it in a water bottle i juss putt the over flow line in it and 160 is 160*C i live in canada
If you have a 160* C thermostat that is WAY to hot. This equates to approx 350* F. My truck a 69 c/s 360 is using a 185-195* F T-stat. year round.
Remember that 100* C = 212* F.
So a correct temperature range should be about 85*-90* C.
Thought me truck was running hot this summer and tested the same way with an IR temperature gun and at the T-stat housing it was dead nutz on at 185* F.
Would not dismiss any of the above suggestions either.
...got the rad flushed and
i think it made it worse than b4 lol
gonna try water pump tomorrow
im juss hoping its not the head gasket
juss cuz i didnt wanna take it apart lol
For sure. :)
But it's not looking good tho. :/
Any white/steamy exhaust? :/
BTW, I opened up and looked inside at several "rebuilt" water pumps
before buying a -new- one. One of those I had installed and had to take
it back off and so got particular after that. ;) Gave up on even "lifetime
warrantied rebuilds" after buying all they had in stock at one place and
sitting in my pickup out in the parking lot and taking them apart and not
finding any of them worth buying. :/ AZ, PB etc ...bought a new one at
Merle's in Tucson.
A friend I worked with in Sacramento told me when he worked at a fuel
pump rebuilding place the first thing they did was test 'em as they came
in and those that tested ok were simply cleaned up and boxed.
it gets pretty dang cold up here so theres gonna be some steam but no extreamly white steam and when it warms up out side it dont steam to much at all everything's normal runs great sounds great no water in oil or oil in water oils smell like oil lil black but good oil none the less this rad didnt come back lookin to good so im tryin to fine a new one and im puttin that water pump on tonight or tommorrrow
AND what u think i should check for in the water pump that make them no good ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????
If the thermostat is installed right and of the correct temperature range, I would suspect a cracked head or blown head gasket between cylinders. The truck may be overheating more from exhaust (compression gasses) blowing into the cooling passageways in the head, rather than overheating. Try these tests: 1. Put the COLD thermostat in a pan of water on the stove, with a kitchen thermometer, and turn the heat on. It should open at or near the temperature stamped on it. 2. With the engine COLD, fill the radiator back up to 1 inch below the top of the upper tank, and leave the radiator cap off. Have someone start the engine while you watch the coolant in the tank. If it starts blowing and burping while still COOL, then you do not have a cooling problem, but an exhaust leak into the cooling. 3. Is the coolant that burps out cool, slightly warm or as hot as it should be? If it is cool or slightly warm, that is, it is cooler than normal temps of coolant in a warmed up engine, then your problem is internal, probably an exhaust leak. Finally, if you suspect exhaust in the coolant, take a sample to a shop that can analyze it for exhaust gas. That will confirm it, if you think it is causing the problem.
