I just recently bought a 2003 F250 7.3L and I am needing to change the oil in it. I have always changed the oil in my other vehicles but this is the first time I have change a diesel. I have seen where people have posted about the HPOP and I don’t understand what they are talking about. If you have any tips or help I would be thankful.
Welcome to FTE. Don't worry about the HPOP for now. Hang around and you'll understand what that's all about later.
The only difference in this change, and the one from the other vehicles is 1) the filter is bigger, so you need a bigger wrench, and 2) There's 15 qts of oil coming out of it, so make sure you have a big drain pan.
If you're in a cold climate, you might consider going with a diesel rated 5w-40 synthetic oil for easier starts, otherwise, the regular 15w-40 is fine.
Hey thanks for the quick replys. I picked up the oil and filter the other day and went with motorcraft filter 1995 and Rotel 15w40. I will let you know how the first time goes. Once again thanks.
I actually went with 0-40 synthetic up here. My father and i both go with that in the winter time, and start ups are alot nicer when it gets really cold!

I've never even heard of that Sheldon. Is that a metric oil or something?
i always punch a hole in the bottom of the old filter to drain it before removing
Great tip. DEFINITELY saves on the mess. Remember the oil cooler drains out the filter when you loosen it, so punching a hole in it saves all that oil from running down the side of the filter. Just make sure you can loosen the filter before you punch it. There have been a couple cases of VERY difficult to remove filters, so if you don't have the tools to get a stuck one off, make sure you can get it loose before you start. I always break the filter loose first, then drain the oil pan, then punch the filter -- I suggest you do the same thing, especially since you have no idea if someone gorilla F'ed that filter on the last time. Nothing like an empty oil pan and hole punched in a stuck filter to ruin your day. LOL
Also, I only put my filters on hand tight. I get them as tight as I can by hand, and that's it. Never had one leak, and never had a stuck filter.
I punched a hole in a filter one time before I loosened it, and that was the last time. It ended up being the one that was stuck on, and the truck had to sit overnight.
I now hand tighten, and give about half a turn extra with a oil filter wrench, just to satisfy my own worries.
Great tip you guys ! I've never even thought of punching a hole in the filter... I always have a big mess with it running all over the place !! I'll be doing that from now on !!!
