Hi all,
I have an 01 f350 (in sig) and I'm wondering if I have the "bad" tranny diode. Oh, what is the tranny diode, and what does it do? I want to know how sound my tranny is before I get a tuner. Are there any other good tests to check the soundness of a transmission?
Thanks
You need to find the build date of the truck or tranny to know if you have the mechanical diode. There's a good chance you do with the 01. Several people here have the mechanical diode and run a chip in their truck. Installing a shift kit or valve body will help prolong the life of the tranny, but there's no check for the soundness of the diode. It will either work great or fail and make you get a new tranny.
Jack, I don't know about the bad tranny. I have what I have in my sig and more. My tranny is doing good so far. I don't know what the hoop low is all about. I guess we will find out soon enough.
My truck was built in June 2001. Does it have the mechanical diode? what is the difference between the mechanical diode and whatever the better one is?
Thanks
Hi Rick,I guess I'm just worried about getting a tuner and blowing something up. If I paid for a tuner, then had to pay for a new tranny just because I got a tuner (mainly for kicks) I would kick myself so hard I wouldn't be able to go to sit on the toilet for a week.
Well Jack, if I blow my trans up, I will get another. What else can I do? Can't let the truck sit. I will get a BTS when I start getting signs of my trans going out. Untill then, I will run this one to the max.

there is a chance you don't have the diode, the trans build date would tell more
they changed in march

Your truck probably does not have a mechanical diode. They stopped using them in March, 2001.
The biggest difference is that the mechanical diodes used in the 4R100s failed MUCH more often than the sprag clutch that it replaced.
I don't know exactly what was wrong with the ones used in the 4R100. They were successfully used in transmissions before and after the 4R100.
Wow, they really talk that thing up. In theory it seems like a great idea, wonder why the high failure rate. I've certainly seen sprags that have blow apart before because of the outward forces they apply. I've never seen a broken mechanical diode in person though.

Initially, it was discovered that high rpm was the killer of the "diode". That's why they pulled it from only the gas trucks produced. Unless there was a failure in the diesels, it was not replaced. Unless you rev your diesel way beyond the stock rev limits, due to a chip or tuner, rpm shoud not be a killer of the "diode". Like any part, it can still fail due to fatigue or defect. I don't think you should worry about the "diode" too much. I replaced mine, during my rebuild, as an upgrade and not because of failure with 128k miles. It was still functioning normally at the time and had no signs of future failure.
If you're worried, then don't do it. However, you are really missing out if you don't get upgraded programming.
I pull a 30' steel 6-horse trailer with mine. I ran DP-Tuner tuning (now my own) for almost 3 years. I have the dreaded "mechanical diode". As long as you're cognizant to the fact that the 1-2 shift is what kills the part, you can get a feel for when your truck will shift and then let up on the "go" pedal slightly to keep stresses down during the shift. 3300 RPM 1-2 shifts under full power aren't good. However, once you're in second, LET HER RIP!

You probably don't have it like Mark said, me on the other hand, my truck was built in March, so I could go either way.
Thanks guys, these are some great responses. I think I'm going to stop worrying about it. I'll get the BTS VB, then the DP tuner, sometime in the next couple of months.
Thanks
i have two 2001 vehicles and both of them had the dreaded mech. diode. both of them died about 150
k miles. also, both of them were running chips. now both have new trannies and DP Tuners.
