Brought this truck, 1969 F250 Camper Special 2wd, back in October, and my mechanical experience was very limited (has gained exponentially since this truck though) I bought the truck and it ran beautifully for two weeks then everything, besides the main engine went out i.e. alternater, starter, VR, wiring harness fried, fuel pump, fuel line, and the list goes on. After replacing everything and hitting this site up for advice, it ran like a champ. It still does, beautifully in fact, but after about a week I press on the brakes and it does not grab until about .5 inch from the floor, I can not pump it either. So my question is what can I check to fix this problem?? I am going to bleed them this weekend as I am going to be under the truck replacing the aux gas tank anyway, but while I am under there I would like to know what to look for.
you probably have a master cylinder gone out. If not you might have a leak in the hydraulics[steel lines, wheel cylinders, hoses] Make sure master cylinder is full an u lay underneath truck while u have someone else depress and release pedal look for leaking fluid. If no leaks clean and adjust all drum brakes while looking at wheel cylinders they should be very dry no wetness at all
Lisa, Start with a thorough inspection of the plumbing looking for any wet spots. Look at the inside of the wheels for dirty wet places. You don't want to find any.
I would suggest a flush with the bleeding. Get a large bottle of brake fluid. Starting at the right rear cycle the bleeding pumps until the fluid changes to the new clearer fluid. Each other wheel will take less effort to clear.
I agree with rogerlc I suspect the master cylinder needs replacing.
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it. I had a local tire store do a free inspection as it got worse when I got into town. I had a list quite long, it was def the master cyliner, there was no fluid in it, there was fluid in the rear, the front, it looked like a mess, unfortunately the job will take too much time for me as I am a NOVICE, so I have enlisted a friend of mine, he is going to do the MC, bearings, calipers, drums, lines etc.... it is going to throw me back about 800 bucks but it will ease my mind that it will be fixed properly. And to think the guy I bought it from said, "Oh yeah I did the brakes".....hmmmmmm.
i agree with jowilker.... id be looking around for a better price on parts... they can be bought cheaper then that... specially if the guys saying 800 just for the parts...
No no...that is with the labor as well (this is his business, I can't expect him to do it for free). Oh the drama!!! That includes putting on a dual exhaust system as well. BUT I live in Spokane WA so if anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears............

Oh the things that we leave out of our posts, add a new dual exhaust in with the brake job make it more bearable.
I might walk in and say that funds are a little tight just now, if you can do it for $700.00 you can do it today.
