SO I got a 78 460 out of a Lincoln and am putting it in my 79 f150 with a C6 behind it. Bottom end it still good, I’m doing the carb, cam, intake, exhaust all new. I also have a set of Dove-C heads off a 429 I’m thinking about putting of the motor, VS reusing the D8VE-A2A heads that are on the motor now. So what do you think good idea or not… and why? Oh and if any one knows if using the DOVE-C heads will change my compretion ratio that would be nice to figure out to… so please let me know any and all info you got on the Dove-C heads and any info about the 460’s from the Lincoln good or bad. Thanks Brody
the D0VE heads will raise your compression approx 1 pt. stock on the 78 is around 8:1 so putting the DOVE heads on will get you approx 9:1 ratio give or take a few tenths.
as far as flow between the two heads they are pretty well identical so the only performance gain will be with the compression gain.
also the D0VE heads use screw in rocker studs and pedastal style rocker arms versus the bolt down style of the later heads so you gotta make sure you use the correct rocker arms.
also you will probably have to determine correct pushrods to use as the pushrods from the 78 head probably won't work with the D0VE heads properly. you will either have to make an adjustable pushrod checker or buy one to determine the correct pushrod lenght for your application.
I was told that the D0VE-C head has about teh smallest combution chamber at around 77cc's.
Seeing I am not a 460 guru, but am farmiliar with motor, and anyone jump in and slap me around if I am totally up may ****.
Me I would look at what I had. I am not sure what type of piston is used if it is dished, I would find out what the valve to piston clearance is and see if it is possible to deck the head, or if it is possble to lower the 460 Deck Height to see about trying to raise the Compression up to almost a 10:1. It should really wake that motor up. Even a point is still a decent jump.
If the heads were to be decked/shaved down, You probably will need to look at the intake manifold to make sure it lines up. If you not looking to go that far I would say just make sure the heads are good, put in some good head gaskets. And take note of what was said before me and be done with it.
