I'm planning on installing a "Helper" pump pretty soon. A friend of mine has one brand new he bought for his cummins, but this pump is rated at 11 psi, to low for cummins and I can get it for free Is it going to be safe to add and am I going to feel a difference in power? I will also install a Racor filter and planning on eliminating the quick fuel connections before the pump. Anything else I should do while I'm under there?
There should be no need for a helper pump (and no diff in power) if the main pump is in good shape, and if it is worn out a helper pump is a band-aid fix.
does your fuel pressure drop significantly under load?
'while your there' do the ITP in-tank kit and possibly shim the regulator if fuel pressure low.
would installing the pump have a negative impact on the trucks performance. i read Guzzle's write up and he liked how his Helper pump made his truck run.
Most folks go with the Carter pump that is rated for 4-6 psi. I went with the Carter pump that is almost identical, but is rated for 5-7 psi. Aside from an electrical gremlin I'm still chasing, no operational problems whatsoever.
I did not, however, notice any real performance gain, probably due to having already been in possession of a healthy pump. The only reason I went with the Carter pump is to overcome any pressure loss in the Baldwin filter so I would not put any additional strain on the stocker.
