Off-Road Starter

I'm looking for a stronger starter. Something that can handle being under mud and water. (If there are any!)

This is the second starter i've bought for this truck in two years. And the first one stopped working while stuck in a mud hole. After I was pulled out and beat the starter a bit it started working, and slipped a little for about a week. After that it was normal again I put a new engine in the truck and the starter didn't work.

The starter in it now is starting to act up. It spins a little longer than it should. It doesn't grind but it makes the noise as if its spinning but not in contact with the flex plate.

So my question is, does anyone know of any starters that are made for being abused?

Maybe you should work on not stalling in the mud hole......? Intake, exhaust, etc?

Anything that has a lifetime guarantee is made to be abused

I bought a lifetime guarantee one from auto zone but so far I've had no problems

It didn't die. I got stuck with a buddy in a mud hole and I was waiting for a bigger truck to come pull me out. Shut it off because it was going to be awhile.

I have a Summit branded mini starter on my 460, has yet to let me down, even when my waterproofing has and the starter was under water... My only issue with it is that after my last wheeling trip, the truck came home on the trailer, got unloaded and hasn't run again since September, there must still have been some moisture in the starter, because it seems to be frozen solid now. I'm sure this wouldn't have been an issue if I had of used it again right away. I need to to yank it and see if I can't get it thawed out... LOL

Hit it with another starter!

Thats how I got my first one going again. I got pulled out of a mud hole and it was seized up. My buddy took me to my house to get a spare starter and when I got there we couldn't get the top bolt out of the starter, the exhaust pipe was in the way.

So we beat it with the spare starter and it worked. =)

Oh, I tried... I carry the old spare starter in the truck and a 5lb minisledge... But, it was -15F when I tried it today... If it's frozen, it's frozen real good... LOL I didn't think of yanking it until I was halfway home from where it's parked... LOL

HAHAHAH your so funny. I've never broken anything that would leave me stranded.

Rawpower get out of here if your just going to be off-topic. And yes, I am DAMN PROUD of my NON-MAINTAINING ABILITIES.

Its a simple question. And now I know what an inspection cover is.

Yes, it is well sealed.

You got headers that are closer to the starter over-heating it? That was a huge problem until I made a heat shield.

And I used to use Napa re-man starters.....dirt-cheap and I think had a 6-month or 1-year free replacemtent. I used to go thru 3-4 a year with my 390-powered 84 F-150, so I bought an extra for a spare...... Mall, woods, wal-mart parking lot.....about 7 min I could have one swapped

Why thank you. To an extent, I'd have to agree.

No, I don't. And if they did exist, I'd advise you to just save the money and just get the lifetime warranty at Vatozone. You can seal the starter pretty well yourself after purchasing it, but when it does fail, you can go get a new one.

Make sure no water can get into your bell housing.
use some rtv on the meeting surfaces... To keep water out.

And honestly, you brag about NOT maintaing your rig, and expect not to catch crap for it?
I figured you had been around long enough to realize the mistakes in your ways, but you will figure it out soon enough.
