4X4 light "stuck" on
I will start at the beginning I was heading out of town on a freezing day & the drive shaft rear companion flange broke. I put the drive shaft in the bed put it in 4X4 to get off the highway (as I had done with a bronco 2) but it didn't move so I tried to push it back down the hill didn't go then I remembered to push forward to release the hubs. It was moving and I was freezing when a chevy stopped and pulled me forward to a parking lot got a jeep and pulled it home. (I also broke the front driveshaft yoke on my 74 F100 when I got home so if anyone knows where I can get one let me know) A couple days later I tried to pull it in the yard off the street and had to go backwards. I get the drive line fixed and now the 4X4 light will not go out and 4WD will not engage. I got the oil changed @ Ford and was told the mechanics were OK so it has to be electrical. When I unplug the motor on the transfer case the light goes out & comes back on when I plug it back in (the plug still has the electric contact grease). When I push the button at an idel (cold) the headlights dim for a few seconds then all is back to the same as it was. The motor is about $90 that I would rather not spend if that isn't the problem (especially if I need a new transfer case). If it is the problem Auto Zone has 2 motors one designated with an "A" how do find out if it is the "A" and whats the difference?
From what I understand, it has a standard dc type motor with a gearbox, and a large contact switch built in that tells the shift electronics which position the motor is actually in.
Also have you checked and tried to turn the driveshaft in the front? Just to see if you really are in 4wd.
Here's one scenario;
If you got the motor out, I am thinking you would be able to work the 4wd buttons, and it would be happy and all the lights would work. That would leave the transfer case. What is wrong with it inside that it's making the motor bind up? I am not sure. Worst case is the transfer case got into neutral and the truck would not move at all.
