I have a 95 f150 4x4 with an auto trans and a 5.0L. Truck has 165,000 miles. And push button 4x4 on the dash. For some reason it seems the 4x4 wont engage. The light on the dash comes on in 4high or 4low. I removed the electric motor on the transfer case and noticed it says where the shaft is on 2h or 4h or 4l. So i tried i putting the motor back on and shifting it and then pulling the motor back off and looking at the shaft and saw it is turning. So is it possible the motor could be bad even though it is turning the shaft??? I can hear the motor move when you put it in gear. Dont know where to go from here anything else i can check out or just replace the motor???
manual locking warn hubs origionally were auto hubs about 10 years ago but origional owener replaced them with the warn after auto hubs failed 3 times. I have put over 40k on the truck since i had it and used 4x4 at least 50 times in snow/sand with no problems locking the hubs so far
As long as both hubs are locked and the x-fer case shifts you should have 4wd. You have to verify both hubs are locking and that the x-fer case isn't busted. Start with the hubs unlocked and shift into 4wd, if you can't rotate the front driveshaft by hand then you know the x-fer case is actually engaging, if the shaft turns then you have a problem inside the x-fer case or with the shift motor. Now do the opposite, put the x-fer in 2wd and lock the hubs, again you should not be able to rotate the driveshaft, if you can then you'll also see one of the side axles rotating and that means the hub on that side isn't locking or is broken.
all right thank you very much i have to go to my grandparents and get their snowblower running and do some carb work on a friends snowmobile and hopefully i should be able to be back home and try exactly what you said and see what happens. I will update you when i get to it hopefully sometime today/tonight thanks
ok so i did everything you said put the transfer case in 4wd and i couldnt turn the shaft, then i did take it out of 4wd and locked the hubs and couldnt move the shaft again. I then went one step further and put the truck on jack stands and put it in 4wd and all the wheels were spinning. So i took it off the stands unlocked the hubs completely and took it out of 4wd. I then proceded to a snow bank and tried to get the trucks rear wheels stuck. I then locked the hubs and put it in 4wd and everthing seemed to work fine. Now im just wondering if the motor could be working sometimes and other times not working correctly. I just hate to go spend 90-150 bucks on the motor if it could be something else. We are getting a big storm tonight and tomorrow and then again sunday so i guess i will see how it works. Im thinking my only other option now is to just use the truck and if i get stuck and 4wd isnt working then try to see if the case is engaging at the time i get stuck. thanks for the help maybe it has just been a fluke in the motor i have no clue thanks again
