I have a 89 E/B bronco with push button 4WD It hasnt worked for some time now and i have replaced the shifter motor and the module. And this thing still does not work.Anyone have any ideas or diagnostic ideas.Do the neutral sensors prevent the t-case from shifting if its not in neutral?
This is what happens. When i push the button i get the click, click, click sound by the glove box.I pulled the shift motor out and layed it out on the grond and when i push the button it just flails around on the ground like it is going in and out, back and forth like a freash fish in the boat LOL Any help anyone? I want to give this one last shot before i give up.
When you take the shift motor off the back of the trasfer case, see if you can turn that cam sticking out with some pliers. If not you have a problem with the trasfer case. Make sure it's pointing ar 2wd also.
Let me know what you find out because mine is doing the exact thing. Actually, mine is locked in 4X4 and all I have to do is lock the hubs. No more buttons work other than it being stuck in 4X4. Lickily it is not in low range.
I been dealing with the tranfer case problem for a while, sounds like yours is either stuck or the motor position sensors dont work there inside the transfer case, along with the speed sensor and magnetic clutch coil. There is a post that was shot to me that has to do with lining the shift postion sensors up in the shift motor it self .but since your motor is actually working i feel your problem lies with in the tranfer case( no expert in this field) just have learned more about this than i wanted to know.mine actually doesnt shift when pressed (switch ok)bought two actuators brain boxes from junk yard(same thing happens)next is buying a tranfer case and mabey a motor----- my motor workS on my work bench and feel sure it has to do with the the shift sensors or motor position sensors . hope this helps . That makes ALOT of sense to me,how would one check these out?
Also is it possible to just use a toggle switch to operate the motor?Like a three position switch. To go both ways.Or would this screw something up?
OK here goes ----u cannot use a 3 way switch on these, its controlled by the brain box which in turn electronically has shift position sensors along with sw. feeds for each input the a/t neutral safety switch, not too mention other goodies.theres a post given to me that helped me considerable mines fixed i took mine back off and had to realign the postion of the limits --finnally got mine but the actual cause of the problem was a shift motor cleaning and a new safety stop which i made out of1/4 inch gas line (my limit stop which was a washer was in pieces) sound complicated it isnt) most people, they say in this post go and buy a new motor when not neeeded read this post carefully it gives u check points to actualy see if your controller or brain box is out .http://www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/web/pages/tcase.html note your brain box is located in the kick panel of your passengers side undo the top two hook ups and push the white button on it----- itll tell u if its the brain box or motor giving you trouble light flashes ----motor ,red light stays on brain box is the culprit all listed in ths post and other help u need ill be glad to assist TR
OK I think i am half why there thanks for the help.I did the white button thing and it gave me the blink code.witch is wierd cause i replaced the shift motor already from a 00 explorer. So i took off the shift motor and removed the plastic cover and hotwired the motor it works great. No this makes me think you are right on the sensor thing something must not be right or misadjusted.Any ideas on that ?
I do not think that motor off a 2000explorer will work .paper work i got from my local junk yard sez -(computer print out )bronco87-96,bronco2 86-90,explorer 91-94, ranger86-94,ftf150 87-96, ftf 250 87-96,ftf350 87-96,mounta 97-99,navajo 91-94,mazpis 91-94 mabey the matrix of these shift pattern on a 00 are not right TR
Hey Black Dog XLT: I'm having a problem with the 4x4 engaging erratically on my 90 Ranger. I hear the module clicking but sometimes the light comes on and sometimes it doesn't. I could really use the link you posted with the diagnostic information (http://www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/web/pages/tcase.html), but the link is dead now. Do you have that information, or another location for the link? Thanks,
I fixed the Ranger transfer case problem, thanks to many of your comments. Turns out the plastic bushing on the back side of the gear inside the transfer case shift motor had deteriorated and fallen off. I replaced it, just like you all said, with a piece of fuel line.
