I'm sure this has been discussed but.... I have an 05 and noticed the little trap door inside the filler is missing. Anyone ever seen those things fall out without help of say maybe, a siphon hose? Is it possible for this model to get siphoned? Have you guys had any luck using locking caps also?
Thanks for any suggestions.
I didn't think they were putting the little "trap" door in the fuel filler anymore.. If you buy an aftermarket, make sure that it is the right one for your truck: vented or non-vented..If you put the wrong one on, your check engine light might come on, as your fuel system and EVAP system is monitored by the 'puter..
I'd err on vented side to begin with. I think all American Rangers since ~87 should be vented unless I missed something. If you have the original cap, look it over & compare it with replacements. You should have what looks almost like a strainer in the end & other indication of vapor relief. It shouldn't do worse than trip a CEL if it's supposed to be unvented. Also turn it 3 clicks or more after fill-up. I would not want to try a non-vented unless it's well designed for one. THAT spooks me a bit due to common EVAP systems.
Looks like I'm probably behind the times. I saw on AA site an '05 cap for a 4.0L that looks unvented. Must be storing vapor in the evap can like a Toyota until next engine start.
Just checked my '06 and it don't got no flap. Bought a STANT locking gas cap and after a couple of months I was getting 'evap leak LARGE code' eery 2-3 days, put stock back on and haven't had a code since.
I think every engine set-up is different- so you can't go by model year-you need engine size, and I think gas tank size might(???) play a factor as well....I would go to the dealer to find out what system(vented/non-vented) that you have, and then you can make an informed decision..
I've tried with a '86 Fiero to pull the gummed up crud for hours after I bought it. There is supposed to be a way with small aquarium vinyl hose hooked up to a hand pump, but VERY slow. Not fun. If a thief was desperate, he would be smarter to punch a hole directly in your tank for the siphon. I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe somebody could come up with a way to adapt a hose into a non-vented cap with a strong suction. Until then, forget it.
ive sipioned fuel from both the taurus and ranger to fill the lawnmower. the tank has to be nearly full though. i use a 3/8 fuel line and boat primer bulb ment for a outboard. have to spray the 3/8 line with wd-40 to get it to slide in far enough. will work though.
