02 Explorer knocking on cold start
I have an 02 Explorer that has developed a knocking sound when it is started cold. It has gotten progressively louder; when it started, I would have described it as a ticking noise.
It seems to go away as the engine warms up, and I am not sure whether it is the weather getting colder, or the problem getting worse, but it makes the noise a lot longer than it used to.
I've read the carbon knock thread, and I was unclear if that was a constant thing, or if it went away after a bit like mine.
Any advice is appreciated.

sounds like a lifter tapping.....try adding some rislone oil treatment to it.
walmart 5$ quart
or you could get the top end of your engine rebuilt to really fix the problem.
My F-150 tapped really bad 80,000 miles ago but after adding rislone it just taps a bit when first started and then warms up and runs good.
still running stronge @ 180,00
I also run val syn 5 - 20w
