We're starting a new prevention med for Boey today. Called Trifexis. It combines heartworm prevention, flea killer, and intestinal parasite prevention, all in one chewable tablet. Requires a prescription. Anyone else using it yet? (for your dogs I mean) We are the first that our vet has prescribed. He said he's been waiting for the first customer to request it.
Have not used it yet, though it looks like it may have a good run through the world of preventives.
Heartworm is something that we are all going to have to be increasingly aware of out here, as there have been cases described in SoCal in recent years.
Anybody that travels with their dogs should definitely have them on heartworm meds.
This is what did it for us. This is the first dog we've treated for HW, even though our vet has pushed it for at least 15 years. He would always say, "there have been local cases", and when I pushed him for statistics, it was "one or two". Statistically very low here, but if you travel you are at greater risk. I am also concerned about unvaccinated dogs coming norte with their illegal owners. I personally believe we are seeing a lot more parvo in puppies, and many die, because of this.
My SoCal dog Aidan who is a 20 month old Border Collie we adopted as a puppy from the local Humane Society. So far so good with Aidan, he is a quick learner and loves to be included and behaves himself well in almost everything and everywhere we go.
Sorry to be so late about this as we were on vacation. But I would like to express my sympathy to those members who have lost their very special dogs recently.
Randy
You better be a lot smarter than that dog, 'cause if not, you're in for.........
Remember, they NEED a job to do. Make sure they have one, or they'll find one for themselves, and you may not like what THEY choose!
Pop
Pop as you pointed out and as I have seen on some Border Collie forums they can be a major "handfull". So far Aidan has turned out to be pretty mild mannered for a BC. If your active he is, if you are not he is not.
This is our second BC and both our first one Sabrina (1977-1992) along with Aidan, were and are very smart dogs. In fact I think Aidan knows that I am not too bright and he takes it easy on me.
Pop... you are also so right about about BCs needing "a job to do".
So far Aidan has tried two trades. The first one was mining as he dug many small holes in our back lawn. With him not finding what he was looking for he gave this profession up after 2 months.
Next was carpentry/demolition. This involved the systematic removal of between 4 and 5 pieces of the wooden lath that covers the bottom portion of our backyard deck daily when I am away at work. Aidan was good at and really enjoyed this trade.
Sadly for Aidan he is now unemployed as we replaced the wooden lath with fiberglass lath panels.
Steve.. thank you for your comment, it is much appreciated.
Heres Lila shes a pure bred golden retriever and is going on 10 years old now.
She used to go riding with us out at Cal City but shes to scared of the jets and the car ride out there so she stays at home most of the time. When she was a puppy we tried taking her to the lake until we realized she wouldnt stay out of the water and tried to climb on everyone that was in the water so she doesnt go there any more either.

Reason: Different picture
Lila sure has a sweet face Dave. I have always had a soft spot for Golden Retrievers. The closest I got to one was our last dog Riley, who was half Aussie and half Golden.
