We've seen lots of FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module) failures lately. Not mine, so far, but it got me to thinking. Your engine build date and serial number are found on that FICM module label, and once replaced, that info will be difficult to find. Your serial number is stamped on the block, but nearly impossible to read without disassembly.
I decided to get a record of mine. It is not so easy to read the label without removing the degas bottle, but a small digital camera can get in there for a photo.
For newbies, this first photo shows the location of the FICM module.
Here is the photo of my label. The date code is 120505. That decodes to May 12, 2005. I know that because my truck was built in June of 05, so December 5th just wouldn't work. I also know that my motor is pre-commonization, even though it is a very early 2006 model year truck.
If anyone knows what any of the other codes mean, please contribute. The corner of the label is curled up a little, but the bottom left corner code is EN200.
If you want your engine serial number and build date, look on the tag on your passenger side valve cover.
Matty, I have heard that too, and all I can say is that my truck does not have such a label on either valve cover, nor does the Powerstroke Bible give it any mention.
I figured it wouldn't hurt to have a photo of that label too, so here it is:
None of those numbers are a motor serial number. I think the little sticker might indicate a flash update. Not sure. The number on it is not a VIN or a S/N.
