Curious, whats the best V8 mpg anyone out there has ever achieved?.....I had a 85 Mustang GT 5.0 5spd,the last year with a Holley 4bbl carb., that achieved 30.5 mpg on a trip from Oregon down to S. Cal.. I wasnt in a hurry and set the cruise at about 70mph most of the drive, in 5th gear that was about 1,700 rpms. I couldnt believe it was accurate so I ran the figures 3 times and it came out the same. Return trip I ran into heavy headwinds and drove faster going north, only got about 24.5 that part of the trip. People do not believe me when I tell them I had a v8 that broke 30mpg and Ive never had anything come close since, ( Im happy to get 11.5 with my 460 ).Had 1 friend said he broke 27mpg with his 86 305 z28 Camaro. ....Anybody else out there ever do as well or better?
Driving from El-Paso to Houston,I got about 20 with a headwind Keeping it around 65 at 1500 RPMs.
Coming back I got about 16-17 pulling a loaded trailer. Kept the RPMs around 2K to stay up to speed because of the hills and I guess thats where it gets into its powerband.
I believe they were 3.55 Wendell, After the Wife "made" me sell that stang, some years later I picked up a ex-state police 5.0 stang, similarly equipped that got about 24 mpg tops but that one had 125,000 miles on it whereas the 85 5.0 was only 1 year old and about 17,000 miles during that trip.

This is possible! A guy from my Mustang GT site runs an '88 GT and shifts according to a vacuum gage. He often tops 30 MPG on highway trips around British Columbia.
My '90 Mustang LX will consistently return 26 MPG on highway trips. The 302 is stock minus exhaust work, pulleys and a K&N filter. I'm running 3.55 gears too. Its fun having a low 14-second car that will get good gas mileage on the way home from the track.
I'd imagine those small V-8's the SHO's had in them would get well over 30mpg if driven properly.
I had a friend with a 97 SHO Taurus v8, it did get pretty good mpg (about 26/27 mpg) on the freeway. But he wasnt a very steady driver (never used the cruise) and drove pretty hard.
My Olds Auroa will get 26 at 75MPH. The best in a pickup with V8 was 21 in a 2003 5.3 Chevrolet pickup. However at Kansas city I turned north on I-29 and batteled a headwind the rest of the trip and was lucky to 19 MPG then.
The best I can recall, was my 07 mustang GT, I got 26 mpg on a trip to W,Va. It was a 5 speed with 3:31 gears. I've had a lot of V-8's over my 30 years of driving, but thats the best I can remember. My 80 t-bird with a 302 would get 25 mpg on trips to W,Va, but I was younger then and flogged it. I've had newer F150 4x4's with V-8's, but I know there no mileage champs.
I admit the MPGs I got on that trip were phenomenal, Probably the fact that the fox body Mustangs weigh only about 2,700lbs helps alot. I know I had a good tailwind going south on I 5 also. I have a neighbor with a 04 Crown Vic, claims 25mpg. Pretty good for fullsize 4 door sedan.
my 05 grand marquis averages 24-26mpg highway pencil and paper calcs with the trip computer very close. i do not drive hard . i agree that it is amazing for a full size car and have actually had to take a photo of the computer reading as some folks wouldnt believe it.

My '79 LTD with a 351w and a C4 got ~20 on the highway, my '89 Grand Marquis with an AOD (would have loved to have that in the LTD) got ~20 around town and 24~26 on the higway. We had an '82 Delta 88 with a 307 that got 28 or so on the highway, caddy claims 34 out of the northstar in one of the newer models.
