yes and no, it will bolt right in, differences are in programming and i think the converter clutch is built different, and it has an exra sensor, the wire harness would not work and your pcm wouldnt operate it quite right.

Has to be from a diesel.
Also has to do with year of the 4r.
Early 4r was non pwm. Then change to pwm.
All 4r can be converted to act as a e4.
Your 96F e4 is analog the 4r is digital.
Allthough there are E4's that are digital.
Started around 97
I would build a E4/4R hybrid. The 4R has a better cooler flow circuit.

no gears and i towed it 200 miles like that it was late at night and didnt have the 5star socket for drive shaft the trans was bad when i got it
