Hey all, I already know the answer (I think), but have to ask out of due dilligence, have to make sure I am spending my bucks in the right place.
So . . . my second POC Ford transmission failed on me on the way home during Chritmas holidays. Had to go Ford with the last R and R due to warranty.
Anyway, I really like what I have read about the BTS unit and have received a purchase and shipping quote, just waiting to book the build date. However, I inquired about the Goodfellas transmission which comes in at $2300, substantially lower than the BTS unit.
Does anyone have any experience or feedback on Goodfellas? They say they custom build and tune, and ROAD TEST each unit before it ships. Has only 1 year, unlimited mile warranty.
Anyfeedback is appreciated as I am about to commit as my truck is sitting, the next time I drive it will be to the heated shop so I can swap out the tranny.
I've never heard of goodfellas. It's my understanding that Brian will warranty his trans as long as you own it. When the 2nd trans came out of my 97. I had a local shop rebuild it. They said it would be "as tough as nails". 2 weeks after I got it. I busted the TC. Me personally, when mine goes. I'll be getting a BTS. Good Luck
BTS builds transmissions that they put in pulling trucks. GAU-RAWN-TEED he can build 'em tough!! Like everyone says, it's THE LAST tranny you'll buy for your truck. $2300 x 2 is more than 1 BTS, even if it takes years to do it.
You stated you might know the answer so all I can say is....
BTS!
It was hard for me to write that check but man o' man, It's the foo shizzle. Too bad you aren't close to me or I would give you a ride in my truck. You can feel the difference just sitting in the passenger seat. Plus, If anything goes wrong, Brian will make it right. I cannot say it any better.
Spend the money and do it right. BTS has a better warranty, which I don't think you will ever use. Check with the other rebuilder and ask if the warranty still stands if you drag race or truck pull with it.
That's what I figured, thanks for the affirmation. I knew in my gut BTS is the way to go, but just needed to test the water a bit. I found out about Goodfellas while looking up transmissions for sale on Ebay. Had emailed Goodfellas as well and received a reply, even at that, I felt BTS was the better deal purely based on the real world feedback all-you-all have to say.
Before making the final decision, you might want to check out a John Woods Tranny as well.
I've had both a BTS, and John Wood's transmissions (two different trucks), and as far as I"m concerned, they are both at the very apex of the pyamid when it comes to built trannys!
Just found a tranny shop close by while looking for a hood for my truck(boys playing basketball, net fell over), after hearing about BTS, i won't even chance going anywhere else.
How much? Well, I'll only tell you guys as long as you understand this is a quote based on my application (99 Supercrew with an 01 engine), etc. Any numbers you get from BTS or hear of may be different and DO NOT quote me. I have been quoted $4100 plus shipping. It looks to me, according to the JWT website, their level 1 unit (rated for 350hp) is $4200. Their site mentioned something about a 60% discount when shipping a transmission. Not sure if that's a 60% discount on purchase price or 60% discount on shipping based on how it's worded. Either way, I made a call and awaiting a call-back from JWT.
I like the fact that (from what I hear) BTS uses ALL NEW parts except for the case. Anyone know what JWT does? Seems they are both pretty comparable in price.
Either way, I only want to have to do this one more time while I still own this truck. So far majority seems to use and favor BTS. Am really curious about JWT now, thanks for the heads up.
I think BTS is rated more then that. I don't know about the JW trans, but I will go to BTS when I need a trans. I live in the next state from Brian. I think you will be happy with either one.
EDIT: 60% on a trans? I would be knocking on the door for that discount.
FWIW, Brian has no levels of his trannies. One price can handle anything. To quote him: "I dare you to break it." Now, it's mechanical and there are always the one-off deal where something will go wrong but he's done good with so many PSD owners that I trust that he will stand be his work. I've read that JW can build a mean tranny so you it seems that you can't go wrong with either. But, being a BTS bubba and owner, I can tell you first hand that his unit is a great product.
