I've been searching, seen the question come up in several posts, but can't quite find the answer i'm looking for.
I have a 77' Ford F250 Supercab 2wd with factory dual piston calipers up front. I am in need of new tires, but do not want to purchase another set of 16.5" tires. I would like to find a set of stock steel 16" 8-lug rims that would fit my truck so could still use my hub caps.
With all th 16" 8-lug canidates out there you'd think it would be an easy task, it's not. I've tried several rims, but they've all been the same. Not enough backspacing up front to clear the dual piston calipers and the center opening is to small for the rear axle.
Rims i've tried:
92-97 F250 16x7 steel - no fit (backspacing, center opening)
99-2004 GMC 16x 6.5 steel - no fit (backspacing, center opening)
73-78 GMC 16x5 - no fit (backspacing, center opening)(also too narrow)
So whats the magic recipe, What should I be looking for at the bone yard?
Is my only hope aftermarket wheels?
If the ones number listed can't be found you can also try the late 80's early 90's dodges. It may just be because the truck my dodge rims off came from a truck that originally came with a cummins, but the dodge ones should work.

I had heard the early dodge trucks used dana 60 rears as well, so I was quite confident the center opening would be large enough for the rear. However, I was unsure about the back spacing up front. Glad to see they are an option as well.

The dodges used 60's and 70's - just like our old fords - so the center bore is good.
I'm pretty sure the backspacing is the same, but I can't remember for sure. I sold my set of Dodge steel wheels or I could have measured the backspacing for you.
Where are you located? I have a set of 16s that I had on a 2wd with dual piston calipers, they are painted gray like you see on most 90s commercial trucks and vans.
I'm running after market Alcoa wheels on my '76 F-350 with dual-piston calipers and no interference issues. If you are having a clearance issue with the 16-inch wheels you've tried, it may only be a minor one that could be resolved by some grinding on the corner(s) of the caliper. I know a couple of others who have resolved the issue this way. I'm assuming the centers don't have a problem with the hubs.
I have run Dodge rims from a late 80s 15 passenger van on my 79 F-250 4x4 without any problems. Unsure if I have dual or single piston calipers though.
Again thanks for the replies, I have a buddy that has a 1 ton dodge van just like riff raff mentioned, I'll make my way over to his place next week to see if they'll fit. I reguarlly stop by the pick and pull yard as well, I'll pick up a mid 80's rim like number dummy suggested to see if they'll work. I'll post back what I find.
Yes. Try a late 1980s F250 or F350 for 8-lug 16" rims. I got a full set of 4 from our local salvage yard for $180 to replace my old 16-1/2" rims. Tires were at 60%-80% tread. Even got a spare rim with a trashed tire on it. This set was removed from an 1988 or 1989 model. Went on with no problems after I fizzed them satin black. They were a dull grey originally. I've noted from this site that 8-lugs 16" rims up to 1997 will fit the older models. F250/350 models went to metric rims in 1998. My truck is 1978 F350 2WD 140wb ( not a SCS ).

The center opening is too small for the rear, and the backspacing is off for the front. I wish they would work because they are 16x7 vs. the 16x6 of the mid 80's trucks. I must say, I was surprised when a pair a 16x7's from a 1995 F250 didn't fit.

Stock rims wouldn't fit? I guess I could see an AFTERMARKET rim not fitting if you took it off a 2wd and were putting it on a 4wd - but even that doesn't make much sense as the 2wds even had the sterling rear end with larger hubs.
I ask because I've got some (stock - alcoa aluminum 16x7's) off a 97 2wd F-250 that fit my 74 crew...
